SECTION 31 00 00 Page 5
1.3 DEFINITIONS
1.3.1 Satisfactory Materials
Satisfactory materials shall comprise any materials classified by ASTM D 2487 as GW, GP, GM, GP-GM, GW-GM, GC, GP-GC, GM-GC, SW, SP, SM, SW-SM, SC, SW-SC, SP-SM, SP-SC, CL, ML, CL-ML, . Satisfactory materials for grading shall be comprised of stones less than 9 inches, except for fill material for pavements which shall be comprised of stones less than 3 inches in any dimension.
1.3.2 Unsatisfactory Materials
Materials which do not comply with the requirements for satisfactory materials are unsatisfactory. Unsatisfactory materials also include man-made fills; trash; refuse; backfills from previous construction; and material classified as satisfactory which contains root and other organic matter or frozen material; materials too wet to support construction equipment. The Contracting Officer shall be notified of any contaminated materials.
1.3.3 Degree of Compaction
Degree of compaction required, is expressed as a percentage of the maximum density obtained by the test procedure presented in ASTM D 698 abbreviated as a percent of laboratory maximum density.
1.4 SUBSURFACE DATA
Subsurface soil boring logs are shown on the drawings. These data represent the best subsurface information available; however, variations may exist in the subsurface between boring locations. The topography of borrow areas as shown on the plans is reasonably accurate; however, recent borrow activities have disturbed the area and affect the accuracy of the geotechnical logs. The Contractor is advised to compare the existing topography with the elevations shown on the logs. In addition to noting the material in that zone between the topographic elevation and that shown on the logs is no longer available, the Contractor is advised that the upper 2 to 3 feet of the material remaining in the borrow area may have been disturbed by post-borrow grading operations.
1.5 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Additional design information and data are available through the Contracting Officer. Information relevant to this specification is included in the Phase II General Design Memorandum (GDM) on the Santa Ana River (Prado Dam). It is emphasized that significant changes have been incorporated into the Plans and Specifications from the designs proposed in the GDM. The GDM is available for information purposes only and is not a part of the contract documents since they have been superseded by the Plans and Specifications.
1.6 Conduct of Work to Permit QA Testing
The Contractor shall vary his operations where directed to allow the Contracting Officer to conduct sampling and in-place density tests on compacted embankment fill. When and where requested, the Contractor shall conduct shallow excavations to enable QA staff to perform required testing. The Contracting Officer will conduct these quality assurance
SECTION 31 00 00 Page 6 tests at approximately the same rate as the Contractor shall conduct the quality control tests as required in paragraph Contractor Quality Control Testing. In addition, the Government will conduct trenching for record testing at approximate 10-foot vertical intervals within Zone I and Zone II. This record testing will including collecting undisturbed samples utilizing 36-inch long thin-walled sample (Shelby) tubes. The Contractor shall supply all labor and equipment necessary to push and extract the samples in an undisturbed manner. The sample tubes will be provided by the Government. The samples will be collected of materials just below the ground surface; it is anticipated that a backhoe or similar equipment will be appropriate. The equipment and necessary attachments shall be suitable such that the samples can be pushed smoothly without pounding or rocking.
