QUESTIONS SUBMITTED BY VENDORS
1. Spectrum Master / Anritsu In the tender documents you mention on Page 8 (of 47) the product “Spectrum Master” from Anritsu.
Are you open for other vendors like (Keysight), which fulfill your technical requirements? In that case we would like to offer the handheld spectrum analyzer Fieldfox. Initially the Fieldfox has been developed for the US Armed Forces and has proven itself there.
A. Absolutely open to other vendors. Anritsu was just one of the quotes used for building the requirements.
2. Directional and omnidirectional antennas This section is completely unclear and we need your advice.
The detailed item description defines: directional and omnidirectional antennas, covering 10 Hz … 20 GHz.
Directional antennas typically start with 650…700 MHz and can go up to 18 GHz max. Would such an antenna fulfill your needs? If not, what are your requirements?
A. Yes, the mentioned antennas would fill our needs. The initial description was intended to cover the broad range requirements of the spectrum analyzer understanding that multiple antennas will be required by band with a preference for directional antennas when possible.
3. Broadband omnidirectional antennas for portable usage can go up to max. 2.5… 6 GHz.
Definitely not up to 20 GHz. The advantage is that they start with relatively low frequencies between 20 … 70 MHz.
To my best knowledge there is only one solution in the market, which covers 18 GHz. But it starts with 5 GHz (!!), so you won’t detect any frequencies lower than 5 GHz. Which frequencies or bands to you want to detect?
Worst case we had to consider two antennas to cover the whole band.
A. Multiple antennas will be required to meet the broad operating requirements required, 10Hz to 20GHz.
Multiple antenna types will be required to detect across these bands, with a preference for directional antennas when possible.
4. Horn Antennas On page 8 (of 47) you mention additional and completely different antennas (directional horn antennas). Do you need those antennas in addition?
A. Horn antennas are not explicitly required. Multiple antenna types will be required to detect across these bands, with a preference for directional antennas when possible.
Specification Neutral “Detailed Item Description”
Product specified on (Spectrum Master / Anritsu)
Comments
Max. Frequency 20 GHz, greater or lower limits are acceptable
32 GHz Should we good enough to capture all signals, which might occur.
You detect solely “over the air”. The max. frequency of your antennas is another given limit. Over the air is the primary concentration. These spectrum analyzers will not be used in a benchtop configuration. The frequency requirement is 10Hz to 20GHz with the requisite antennas required. There is a preference for directional antennas when possible.
Analysis Bandwidth 88 MHz Not specified Should exceed the highest modulation bandwidth of the signals you want to capture. If you have to detect frequency hopping: should ideally be wider than the band, in which the signal hops 88MHz seemed to be a common industry standard.
We are open to vendors that exceed that bandwidth to aid in frequency agile signals.
Realtime Spectrum Analysis requested Not available For the defined application Realtime Capability would indeed be extremely important You want to capture short RF-pulses. Only Realtime capability allows you to detect bursts >= 5…9us with 100% probability.
Sweeping signal analyzers sweep the spectrum as quick as they can. But they cannot be everywhere at the same time. Thus only stable and long signals can be captured with 100% POI.
Agreed. These spectrum analyzers will be used in the field so as near-real time viewing of bands is preferred.
Directional antenna 10 Hz – 20 GHz Not specified For the application I suspect a directional antenna is absolutely important; the best antennas in the market cover 380 MHz … 20 GHz.
To my best knowledge directional antennas with frequencies <380 MHz do not exist. There is a preference for directional antennas when possible.
Understand the limits of HF and low-VHF antennas.
Omnidirectional antenna 10 Hz – 20 GHz Not specified For the application I suspect an omnidirectional antenna is absolutely important Omnidirectional antennas can cover about 300 MHz …. 8 GHz; To my best knowledge omnidirectional antennas with frequencies <300 MHz or > 8 GHz do not exist.
Wide-band omnidirectional antenna are valuable.
Both directional and omni-directional antennas will be required.
Isotropic 3D antenna Up to 6 GHz Not specified 6 GHz is a realistic Attenuators “all required” Not specified When you capture over the air, you won’t need any additional external attenuators. The signal analyzer has internal attenuators which can be used instead. Only if you want to connect the analyzer directly to a waveguide you might need additional attenuation. But in that case we needed more information about the max.
power.
Only as required. Some vendors recommended additional attenuators to connect to an external laptop.
Directional Horn Antenna
17.6 -26.7 GHz, incl.
Waveguide to Coax Adapter
Not specified requested Does only make sense when the analyzer covers the same max. frequency. The item description defines “only”20 GHz, greater or upper limits are acceptable.
That's contradictory.
The requirement is 10Hz to 20GHz
Directional Horn Antenna
26.4 – 40.1 GHz, incl.
Waveguide to Coax Adapter
Not specified requested See above. In consequence you needed an analyzer with much more than 26.4 GHz.
The requirement is 10Hz to 20GHz
Mechanical design Portable / Semi-rugged
Instrument itself: yes But the mandatory laptop / tablet?
The complete solution should ideally fulfill the spec portable / semi-rugged A laptop or tablet is acceptable. These spectrum analyzer will be used in a field environment and not as a bench test system.
We’re asking clarifications for the following:
5. The waveguide adapters are also in frequency bands higher than the required analyzer?
A. The requriement is 10Hz to 20GHz with anscilary equipment to support that requirement.
Comments on connectors were based on market research and are not absolute. Any connector to meet the operating band is acceptable.
6. Note. The 2.92 mm connector fits perfectly with the 3.5 mm connector (or SMA which has a lower frequency range) The 2.4 mm connector plugs perfectly with the 1.85 mm (V) connector and works up to 50 GHz.
A. The requriement is 10Hz to 20GHz with anscilary equipment to support that requirement.
Comments on connectors were based on market research and are not absolute. Any connector to meet the operating band is acceptable.
