CHAPTER II
TECHNICAL PROVISIONS
SECTION 1
CLEANING
TP-1: Cleaning
TP-1-01 Cryogenic cleaning Cryogenic cleaning is a process similar to sandblasting but with solid CO2 or carbon ice. Carbon ice is projected on surfaces to be cleaned in a compressed air flux.
The principle of this cleaning is based on three simultaneous effects occurring when carbon ice comes into contact with the polluted surface.
The thermal effect comes from the difference of temperature between carbon ice (-78.2oC) and the surface to be cleaned. This difference provokes a thermal shock that will crack and shrink the pollution, which will get loose from the surface.
The kinetic effect, or mechanic effect, comes from the impact of carbon ice on the pollution. The resulting effect is a mechanic embrittlement of the pollution.
The physical effect of sublimation comes from the physical characteristics of CO2. The change of state of CO2 – from -78.2oC to 20oC (regular temperature) is a change from solid to gas without passing through the liquid phase. This is called sublimation. CO2 expands up to 500 times its volume and expels the pollution, already fragile, from its support. This very efficient process is a dry process which does not generate secondary waste. It preserves the surface of the supports by its very soft mechanical action. It is 2 to 4 times faster than the classical methods.
Safety equipment Cryogenic cleaning requires following safety equipment:
Ear plugs. As during cryogenic cleaning, the sound level can sometimes exceed 85 dB(A), it is recommended to wear ear plugs.
Gloves. Wearing gloves is recommended to prevent any risk of freezing due to carbon ice grains.
Protective glasses. To protect the eyes from volatile particles, it is recommended to wear protective glasses. It is also recommended to wear full equipment with helmet, visor and ear plugs.
Respiratory protection. According to the presence of dust or generated concentration of CO2, slight or heavy respiratory protection measures are necessary.
Long sleeve clothing. The temperature of dry ice may cause burns to the operator.
Carbon dioxide warning device. To detect the concentration of CO2 in the air, the personnel in charge with the cryogenic cleaning must wear an individual CO2 detector. It releases an alarm as soon as it reaches a critical concentration. Always ensure that there is adequate ventilation in order to prevent the build-up of a dangerous concentration of carbon dioxide.

D. Preparation of support. Concrete supports must be mechanically prepared by shot blasting, milling or any other appropriate method, in order to remove chalking and get an open, adhering and clean surface.
Non-adhering concrete must be eliminated, and damaged areas such as gravel nests and holes must be completely cleared.
The repair of the support and filling of holes must be carried out with products of the same manufacturer.
Concrete supports must be coated with a primer or “drawn to zero” in order to get a plane surface.
Protruding parts must be eliminated, by sandblasting or else.
Dust and friable particles must be removed, preferably with an industrial vacuum cleaner.
E. Application temperature / Conditions / Limitations
• Room temperature : minimum + 10oC / maximum +30oC
• Temperature of the support: minimum + 10oC / maximum +30oC
• Relative humidity degree ≤ 80%
• Dew point: during application and hardening, the temperature of the support must be minimum 3oC above dew point
F. Application of the Paint. Before application of the paint, the humidity content of the support must be ≤ 4%.
1. Primer coat.
Application of an adhering primer coat with two-component epoxy resin. On the support, previously prepared as indicated above, apply the primer coat with a brush, roller or scraper. Be careful to apply a continuous, undamaged coat on the entire surface. If necessary, apply two coats of primer.
2. Basic coat
Apply self-leveling coat of two-component colored epoxy resin powdered with quartz sand.
Mix: 1 part of resin (A+B) + 1 part of quartz sand (0.1 – 0.30mm) Powdering: To refusal with granulates to be defined.
After complying with the covering time, spread the mixture uniformly with a plane or notched scraper, and directly pass the roller crossways to facilitate the leveling of the poured mass and so avoid air bubbles. Powder with quartz sand.
3. Sealing coat
After complying with the covering time and after elimination of sand in excess with a brush and an industrial vacuum cleaner, application of a two-component colored epoxy resin sealing coat.
Spread the resin with a hard rubber scraper and smoothen (crossways) with a microfiber roller with short plushy hairs.
