1.4 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

1.4.1 Factors Used for Converting In-Place Volume to Weights

1.4.1.1 Revision of Bidding Schedule Quantities

The estimated quantities of stone listed in the BIDDING SCHEDULE were computed on the basis of stone having a percentage of voids of 33 percent and a bulk specific gravity (SSD) (saturated surface dry basis) as 2.7 based on water having a unit weight of 62.4 pounds per cubic foot . When

SECTION 35 31 19 Page 4 the SSD of the stone to be used in the work is other than that above, the estimated quantities will be revised by multiplying them by the fraction which results when the SSD of the stone furnished is divided by the value shown in the above table for each respective stone gradation. Revision for the percentage of voids will likewise be made. The Contracting Officer will issue a modification to the Contract in accordance with the Contract FAR CLAUSE 52.243-4, CHANGES, in Section SUPPLEMENTARY INSTRUCTIONS TO OFFERORS to adjust the estimated quantities in the BIDDING SCHEDULE. The revised quantities will then be the quantities from which the allowable 15 percent variation in estimated quantity, for payment purposes, will be determined as defined in Contract FAR CLAUSE 52.211-18, VARIATION IN ESTIMATED QUANTITY, in Section SUPPLEMENTARY INSTRUCTIONS TO

OFFERORS.

1.4.1.2 Re-revision of Estimated Quantities

If during the progress of the work it is determined that the delivered stone actually placed has a percentage of voids or a bulk specific gravity range different from that on which the BIDDING SCHEDULE is based, the BIDDING SCHEDULE will be further revised in accordance with paragraph

REVISION OF BIDDING SCHEDULE QUANTITIES.

Unless approved otherwise, materials shall be procured from a supplier that holds current state certification as an approved, active commercial aggregate supplier. If the Contractor proposes to furnish materials from another source, the Contracting Officer will make such investigations and evaluations as necessary to determine whether or not materials meeting the contract requirements could be produced from the proposed source. Stone gradations shall be from stone sources approved in accordance with applicable paragraphs of this Section. Regardless of source, the stone shall be durable, sound, and free of features, which may tend to increase deterioration from natural causes or breakage during handling, transportation, or placement. These features may include, but are not limited to fractures, seams, vugs, bedding, stylolites, planes of separation, weathering, argillaceous material, and micaceous minerals.

Inclusions of any dirt, sand, clay, shale, chert, oil and oil-stained stones and rock fines and bituminous or any organic or other deleterious material will not be permitted. Stone exhibiting vugs totaling not more than five percent of the total surface area of any face and less than four-inches in maximum diameter, provided that they are not aligned along bedding planes or planes of weakness will be acceptable, other provisions of this specification withstanding. All stone shall be highly resistant to weathering and disintegration under freeze / thaw and wetting / drying conditions. The Contractor shall perform all quality control in accordance with "CONTRACTOR QUALITY CONTROL" of this specification. It is the Contractor's responsibility to assure that quality control for all work performed at the quarry or quarries and the delivery site comply with all Contract requirements. Contractor shall insure that records are maintained of quality control tests, inspections and corrective actions.
