2.4 MACHINE WORK

2.4.1 Finished Surfaces

2.4.1.1 Finish Surface Indicated

Where surfaced finishes are indicated on the drawing or specified herein, the symbols used or finishes specified are in accordance with ASME B46.1. Values of roughness height are specified in microinches. Roughness specified is the maximum values and any lesser degree will be satisfactory. Compliance with specified surface will be determined by sense of feel and visual inspection of the work compared to Standard Roughness Specimens, in accordance with the provision of ASME B46.1. Values of roughness width and waviness height are not specified, but shall be consistent with the general type of finish specified by roughness height. Flaws such as scratches, ridges, holes, peaks, cracks or checks which will make the part unsuitable will be cause for rejection.

2.4.1.2 Finish Surface Not Indicated

Where the finish is not indicated or specified, the type of finish shall be that type which is most suitable for the surface to which it applies and shall be consistent with the class of fit required. Surfaces to be machined finished shall be indicated on the shop drawings by symbols which conform to ASME B46.1.

2.4.2 Unfinished Surfaces

So far as practicable, all work shall be laid out to secure proper matching of adjoining unfinished surfaces. Where there is a large discrepancy between adjoining unfinished surfaces, they shall be chipped and ground smooth, or machined to secure proper alignment. Unfinished surfaces shall be true to the lines and dimensions shown on the drawings and shall be chipped or ground free of all projections and rough spots. Depressions or holes not affecting the strength or usefulness of the parts may be filled in a manner approved by the Contracting Officer.

2.4.3 Bearing Surfaces

Bearing surfaces under the heads and nuts of turned bolts, the surfaces of bosses, and the ends of hubs shall be machine-finished at right angles to the bore.

2.5 PROTECTION OF MACHINED SURFACES

2.5.1 Machine-Finished Surfaces

Machine-finished surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned of foreign matter. All finished surfaces shall be protected with suitable means. Unassembled pins, bolts, bearings, etc. shall be oiled wrapped with moisture resistant paper or protected by other approved means.

2.5.2 Finished Surfaces of Ferrous Metals

Finished surfaces of ferrous metals to be in bolted contact shall be washed with a rust inhibitor. Exposed machine finished surfaces shall be thoroughly cleaned of foreign matter. All unpainted machine finished surfaces shall be protected by Houghton-Vaughan Co.'s "Rust Veto No. 342", for shipping and storage protection.

2.6 WELDING

2.6.1 Preparation for Welding

Pieces to be joined by fusion welding shall be accurately cut to size and formed prior to welding. All forming shall be done by pressure and not by blows. The preparation of the edges to be joined shall be such done to ensure thorough and complete penetration; if necessary, the edges shall be planed. The relative positions of the pieces at the time of welding shall be such that the cooling of the weld will not set up excessive strains in the weld or parent metal. All pieces to be welded shall be free from rust, paint, or other foreign matter for a distance of not less than ½ inch back from the welding edge.

2.6.2 Welding Procedure

The Contractor shall prepare for submission to the Contracting Officer a complete schedule of welding procedures which shall consist of detailed procedure specifications and sequence for each structure to be welded and tables or diagrams showing the procedure to be used for each required joint. All welding shall be done by the electric-arc method, using a process which will exclude the atmosphere from the molten metal. The welding shall be done in a manner that will produce complete fusion with the parent metal. The welded joints shall be reasonably smooth and free from grooves, depressions, and other irregularities. All welding, unless otherwise specified, shall be in accordance with AWS D1.1/D1.1M. Parts to be welded shall be rigidly held by sufficient clamps or other adequate means to keep the parts in accurate position. Adequate precautions shall be taken to minimize residual stresses and distortions. Welds in size up ¼ inch may be made in one pass; larger welds shall be made in two or more passes.

Successive beads or layers shall be in uniform thickness. Each layer of weld metal shall be thoroughly cleaned before subsequent layers are deposited. Upon completion each weld shall be thoroughly cleaned and brushed with wire brushes, and extraneous nodules of weld metal shall be removed by chipping or grinding. All welds shall be free from unsound metal, cracks, and overlap. Minor imperfections in welds may be chipped out and defect re-welded, subject to approval. Distortions due to welding or stress-relieving shall be corrected by pressing and not by blows.

2.6.3 Qualification of Welders

Before beginning the production of the welded parts of the work, the Contractor shall furnish the Contracting Officer a written statement with respect to each welding operator to be used on the work. This statement shall affirm for each welding operator that he has been qualified for the work in accordance with the requirements of AWS D1.1/D1.1M; it shall give his name and identifying number, letter, or symbol; and it shall state by whom and when qualified and for what welding positions he was qualified. The expense of any necessary test to be performed to so qualify a welding operator shall be borne by the Contractor. The Contractor shall require any welder to repeat these tests when, in the opinion of the Contracting Officer, the work indicates reasonable doubt of the welder's efficiency.

2.6.4 Weld Inspection

2.6.4.1 General

Welding may be subject to inspection by Government Inspectors to determine conformance with the requirements of AWS D1.1/D1.1M, the approved welding procedures, and the provisions stated elsewhere in these specifications.

The Contracting Officer may require supplemental examination of any joint or require coupons to be cut from any location in any joint. Costs associated with the joint inspection, cut coupons or repair from such inspections shall be borne by the Contractor.

2.6.4.2 Non-Destructive Testing

All completed welds shall be cleaned and carefully examined for insufficient throat or leg sizes, cracks, undercutting, overlap, excessive convexity or reinforcement and other surface defects to ensure compliance with the requirements of AWS D1.1/D1.1M, Section 6. Welds shall be unacceptable if shown to have defects prohibited by AWS D1.1/D1.1M, Section 6, Part C. Ten percent of all welds shall be non-destructively tested. All shall be non-destructively tested.

2.6.4.3 Testing Agency

Nondestructive examination of welds and evaluation of the tests or inspections as to the acceptability of the welds shall be performed by a testing agency adequately equipped and competent to perform such services.
