1.2 Background on Preventative Maintenance and Repairs for the Blade Lift Transport at Tower 2:
The original Blade Handling System was built in the 1980’s and relocated from NADEP Pensacola to Corpus Christi Army Depot in 1998. The US Army contracted to Jacobs Sverdrup Technology Group under Project #090848 dated August 13, 2004 for a Reliability Enhancement Study. The study revealed it was complicated and there were 46 sequential steps that had to occur for the automated system to perform a complete blade transport. Each step required coordination and alignment of multiple components, and multiple interlocks were required before the next step was performed. Many of the previous failures have been the result of misalignments, maladjustments, and interlock failures. The failures negatively impacted the UH-60 main rotor blade production capacity.
The present Blade Handling System was designed/built and installed and released for use in February 2013. It employs a simple single point hydraulic ram lift similar to the other whirl tower’s lift. The new lift incorporated additional safety features with a number of pneumatic actuators riding on guide rails and interlocks that interface with both the Blade Handling System and Whirl Stand Run Permissive. The actuators, guide rails, pneumatic lines, sensor and switches are exposed to the environment and must be maintained for full operations.
Background on Preventative Maintenance, Evaluation, / Inspection, Repair, Technical Support, Certification and Parts support for the Blade Lift System for Whirl Tower #1 (Y6391) and Personnel Elevator for Tower #2, (R8914):
Currently a Dover hydraulic ram lift system is installed in whirl tower #1 a.k.a. Blade Balance Stand #1. The lift system is the original system that had been installed at New Cumberland Army Depot in 1974. This lift system is a vital unit enabling the personnel to install the blades on the hub. A personnel elevator is installed at whirl tower #2.
