About this file

This document outlines requirements for a Superpave Gyratory Compactor to be procured through federal contract number W912HZ23Q9478 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Engineer Research and Development Center. The required compactor must meet specifications in AASHTO T312 and ASTM D6925, with dimensions up to 36 inches wide by 36 inches deep by 56 inches tall and a weight between 750 to 1,000 pounds. It must apply pressures from 600 to 700 kPa, operate at 30 gyrations per minute, and acquire and output data on gyration count and height via USB connection. The system must compact 150mm diameter specimens and include kits to compact 100mm specimens, along with four 150mm molds and two 100mm molds. Freight, installation, and training must be included in pricing, and delivery is required by November 30, 2023 to the specified address.

DESCRIPTION OF REQUIREMENT

Superpave Gyratory Compactor

Purpose and Scope

The Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory (GSL) of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and

Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, MS, frequently performs laboratory testing and analysis of asphalt mixtures to characterize their engineering properties. Asphalt mixture specimens must be compacted using a Superpave gyratory compactor (SGC). APB requires an

SGC that can perform asphalt compaction in accordance with ASTM D6925, “Standard Test

Method for Preparation and Determination of the Relative Density of Asphalt Mix Specimens by

Means of the Superpave Gyratory Compactor,” and be capable of providing height versus gyration data.

Description of Requirements

1. Superpave Gyratory Compactor that meets the following requirements:

a. Compliant with AASHTO T312 and ASTM D6925

b. Dimensions: maximum of 36 in. wide by 36 in. deep by 56 in. tall

c. Weight: minimum of 750 lb, maximum of 1,000 lb

d. Electrical: 115 VAC, 60 Hz, 1 ph

e. Applied pressure range: 600 ± 100 kPa at a minimum

f. Gyration angle range: 0.00° to 1.50°

g. Gyration speed: 30 gyrations per minute

h. Compaction modes: (1) to number of gyrations, (2) to specified height, (3) to locking point

i. Data acquisition parameters: number of gyrations, height

j. Data output: USB at a minimum

k. Specimen extrusion: built-in

l. Specimen size range: 100 to 150 mm diameter

m. Include conversion kit for compaction of 100 mm diameter specimens in addition to 150 mm diameter specimens

2. Gyratory Molds:

a. Quantity (4) 150-mm mold assemblies

b. Quantity (2) 100-mm mold assemblies

Preference would be for the machine to be set up at the factory for 150 mm.

3. Freight, installation, and training should be included in pricing as necessary.

Delivery

The system can be received at any time, but no later than November 30, 2023.
