About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document related to a federal contract opportunity for removable safety railing installation.
The project requires installation of approximately 100 linear feet of removable safety railing on three sides of a structure, with no existing rails requiring removal. The railing system must comply with Federal OSHA codes, specifically withstanding a 200-pound concentrated load applied to the top rail in any downward or outward direction. The contractor must use Schedule 40 pipe construction, which equates to 10-gauge to 12-gauge steel depending on the diameter, to reliably meet force requirements and comply with OSHA's non-mandatory structural guidelines. Individual removable sections must be 5 to 8 feet in length. The accompanying diagram indicates a three-sided configuration with dimensions of 20 feet across the top and 40 feet on each side, totaling approximately 100 linear feet.

Question: Are there any sort of rails there now (i.e., that need to be removed)?
Answer: There are no rails there now.
Question: Will you also need the end balancing/stabilizing rails included, or are you only looking for the 100 linear feet of straight rail?
Answer: The basis for this project is to install approximately 100 LF or removeable safety railing on (3) three sides.
Federal OSHA codes dictate that the final guardrail system must withstand a 200-pound concentrated load applied to the top rail in any downward or outward direction. To reliably meet this force requirement and comply with OSHA's non-mandatory structural guidelines, industrial steel safety rails typically use Schedule 40 pipe, which equates to roughly 10-gauge to 12-gauge steel depending on the diameter. Removable section shall be 5 to 8 feet long.
