A minimum of 7 days prior to scheduled use, submit proposed thread type for sewn seams along with data sheets showing the physical properties of the thread. Construct sewn seams with high-strength polyester, nylon, or other approved thread type. Thread shall have ultraviolet light stability equivalent to the geotextile and the color shall contrast with the geotextile.

2.3. MANUFACTURING QUALITY CONTROL SAMPLING AND TESTING

The Manufacturer is responsible for establishing and maintaining a quality control program to assure compliance with the requirements of the specification. A minimum of 7 days prior to scheduled use, submit manufacturer's quality control manual. Perform manufacturing quality control sampling and testing in accordance with the manufacturer's approved quality control manual. As a minimum, geotextiles shall be randomly sampled for testing in accordance with ASTM D4354, Procedure A. Acceptance of geotextile shall be in accordance with ASTM D4759. Tests not meeting the specified requirements will result in the rejection of applicable rolls.

Seam Strength Testing

The Contractor shall collect samples of field and factory sewn seams and arrange for laboratory strength testing in accordance with ASTM D4884/D4884M.

All samples shall be tested to verify that the geotextile meets the requirements specified. A minimum of 17 tests shall be required.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1. INSTALLATION

The manufacturer’s recommended installation procedures shall supersede all methods described herein.

Placement

The Contractor shall furnish to the Contracting Officer or his/her designated representative the manufacturer’s written installation procedures for the geotextile upon delivery of this material to the site.

The Contractor shall visually inspect all rolls of geotextile for damage and imperfections prior to its placement. Damaged and defective rolls of geotextile shall be marked and repaired as required. The Contractor shall place the geotextile in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation procedures and as specified herein. Panels of geotextile shall be cut using a hot knife. Each panel shall be oriented with the long dimension (machine direction) perpendicular to the centerline of the dike embankment within a tolerance of 5 degrees. The geotextile shall be laid flat and smooth to minimize tension, stress, folds wrinkles, and creases. Sections displaced by wind or other occurrences shall be approved by the Contracting Officer or his/her designated representative prior to their use. Panels that are placed along the straight portions of the dike alignment shall be sewn together by the Contractor at the selvage as specified. Overlapping without sewing is required in the curves of the dike alignment to eliminate folds and wrinkles.

Overlapping in these areas shall be no less than five feet and a minimum of three inches of cohesionless soil shall be placed by the Contractor between

DIKE CONSTRUCTION

SECTION 31 05 19.00 34 PAGE 6

the layers of geotextile at the overlap to provide a frictional connection.

See the drawings for the geotextile placement elevation and locations.

Geotextile rolls shall be handled and unloaded by hand, or with load carrying straps, a fork lift with a stinger bar, or an axial bar assembly. Geotextile rolls shall not be dragged, lifted by one end, lifted by cables or chains, or dropped to the ground.

Subgrade Preparation

The surface underlying the geotextile shall be smooth and free of ruts or protrusions which could damage the geotextile. Subgrade materials and compaction requirements shall be in accordance with Section 35 41 00.00 34

DIKE CONSTRUCTION.

Geotextile Installation

(a) Before placing reinforcement, compact the subgrade or subsequent lift of fill and level-grade it. The surface shall be smooth and free of debris, windrows, sheepsfoot impressions, and rocks.

(b) Reinforcement shall be placed within a tolerance of +/- 0.3’ at the elevations and to the extent shown on the construction drawings. Orient the reinforcement with the design strength axis perpendicular to the slope face. Place reinforcement strips immediately next to adjacent strips to provide 100 percent coverage with a minimum 3 feet of overlap along the roll length.

(c) Install the reinforcement in tension. The reinforcement shall be pulled taut and anchored with staples or stakes prior to placing the overlying lift of fill. The tension shall be uniform along the length of the slope and consistent between layers.

(d) All reinforcement shall be 100 percent covered by soil so that reinforcement panels do not contact in overlaps. Where the slope bends, a veneer of cohensionless fill shall be placed to a nominal thickness of 3 inches to separate overlapping reinforcement.

(e) Splicing shall not be allowed unless directed by the government representative. Splicing shall be limited to only one splice per reinforcing strip and no two consecutive reinforcing strips shall include a splice. Individual reinforcing lengths less than 10 feet shall be discarded. Seams shall be placed facing upward for inspection purposes.

(f) Reinforcement shall be cut to fit around structures in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

(g) When cutting back dike and berm to install spillway systems, cut back a 10’ wide level section and overlap 10’ on each side of spillway.

Fill Placement

(a) Reinforced fill shall be placed consistently in the same direction while ensuring that the reinforcement remains taut.

Fill shall be placed, spread, and compacted in such manner that minimizes the development of wrinkles in or movement of the

DIKE CONSTRUCTION

SECTION 31 05 19.00 34 PAGE 7

reinforcement.

(b) A minimum fill thickness of 6 inches is required prior to operation of vehicles over the reinforcement. Sudden braking and sharp turning shall be avoided. Tracked equipment shall not turn within the reinforced fill zone to prevent tracks from displacing the fill and damaging the reinforcement. Construction equipment shall not be operated directly upon the reinforcement as part of the planned construction sequence. Sheepsfoot rollers and such will not be permitted for use in compacting reinforced fill within 2 feet over geotextile. Discing of fill will not be permitted. Hauling of fill material shall not occur over geotextile unless there is 2 feet or greater cover over the geotextile.

Protection of Work

Work shall be protected against damage from subsequent operations.

3.2. SEAMS

Sewn Seams

Seams shall be constructed in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements as necessary to ensure seam strength as specified in Table 1. The Contractor shall furnish the Contracting Officer or his designated representative the manufacturer’s written seam construction requirements upon delivery of the geotextile to the site. Seams running normal to the reinforcement direction are not allowed except as permitted for making patch repairs. Seams shall be continuously sewn along the selvage of each panel and tested at a minimum frequency as specified in ASTM D4884/D4884M. The thread at the end of each seam run shall be tied off to prevent unraveling. Skipped stitches or discontinuities shall be sewn with an extra line of stitching with a minimum of 18 inches of overlap.

3.3. REPAIRS

Damaged or defective geotextile shall be replaced or repaired. Repair shall be made in accordance with the manufacturer’s repair procedures. The Contractor shall furnish the Contracting Officer or his designated representative the manufacturer’s written repair procedure upon delivery of the geotextile to the site. Geotextile which cannot be repaired shall be replaced.

3.4. PROTECTION

Protect the geotextile during installation from clogging, tears, and other damage. Damaged geotextile shall be repaired or replaced as directed. Use adequate ballast (e.g. sand bags) to prevent uplift by wind. The geotextile shall not be left uncovered for more than 14 days after installation.

3.5. COVERING

Place cover soil in a manner that prevents tensile stress from being mobilized in the geotextile, and prevents wrinkles from folding over onto themselves. On side slopes, soil backfill shall be placed from the bottom of the slope upward. Cover soil shall not be dropped onto the geotextile from a height greater than 3 feet. No equipment shall be operated directly on top of the geotextile without approval of the Contracting Officer. Use equipment

DIKE CONSTRUCTION

SECTION 31 05 19.00 34 PAGE 8

with ground pressures less than 7 psi to place the first lift over the geotextile. A minimum of 12 inches of soil shall be maintained between full-scale construction equipment and the geotextile. Equipment placing cover soil shall not stop abruptly, make sharp turns, spin their wheels, or travel at speeds exceeding 5 mph.
