2.1.8 Stone Sources

The sources from which the Contractor proposes to obtain stone materials as required for the features in these specifications shall be selected and identified to the Contracting Officer well in advance of the time when the materials will be required in the work, but no less in advance than 20

SECTION 32 22 13.38 Page 8 days. Contractors may select a quarry approved for coarse aggregate production by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). The approved NCDOT producer/supplier list for coarse aggregate is provided at the following internet location:

https://apps.dot.state.nc.us/vendor/approvedproducts/Producer.aspx

If a proposed stone source is a quarry not listed on the NCDOT producer/supplier list, the selected quarry may still be utilized as a stone source if approved following Corps review. Corps review is to include the quarry being inspected by a Corps geologist, testing performed on the rock material, review of supply capability, and material documentation of use on similar projects. If review information meets projects criteria needs, material from the quarry will be approved.

2.1.9 Stone Not Meeting The Specifications

If, during the progress of the work, it is found that the stone being furnished and/or placed by the Contractor does not meet all the requirements of the specifications, the Contractor shall be required to furnish other stone of a quality acceptable to the Contracting Officer. Any stone rejected at the site of work as not meeting the requirements of these specifications for quality, condition, size, or otherwise, shall be removed from the site by and at the expense of the Contractor. All stones which are broken during shipment to the work site or during placement shall be rejected. The Contractor shall dispose of all rejected stone in a manner approved by the Contracting Officer.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 FOUNDATION PREPARATION

The east shoreline rip rap bank protection on which geotextiles are to be placed shall be compacted and graded to provide a relatively smooth surface condition free from obstruction, debris, depressions, erosion features or vegetation. Depressions and eroded areas shall be brought to grade by filling and compacting with earth material similar to the adjacent material. No additional payment will be made for any material thus required. Immediately prior to placing the geotextile, the prepared base will be reviewed by the contracting Officer and no geotextile shall be placed thereon until after the area has been approved. Geotextiles shall be placed as shown on the drawings and in accordance with Section 31 05 22 GEOTEXTILES USED AS FILTERS, before any placement of stone.

3.2 INSTALLATION OF GEOTEXTILE

The placement of geotextile shall be in accordance with the requirements of Section 31 05 22 GEOTEXTILE USED AS FILTERS, paragraph, INSTALLATION OF THE

GEOTEXTILE.

3.3 PLACEMENT OF STONE

3.3.1 General

The contractor shall prepare and submit a Placement Plan showing his proposed method of construction, to include the method of placement and equipment to be used to the Contracting Officer for approval. Care shall be taken to place the stone of various classifications so that they will form a compact mass, and form as nearly as practicable a cross-section of

SECTION 32 22 13.38 Page 9 the height, width, and slopes as shown on the contract drawings. All stones shall be carefully placed so as to leave no large voids between them.

Special care shall be taken during placement of stone over and in close proximity to existing or proposed structures. During placement of stone over the downslope of the dam, each stone in each layer shall be lowered to rest before being released.

3.3.2 Minor Adjustments

Since the water depths shown on the drawings are subject to change by currents, the Contracting Officer may make minor alterations in the plan limits, dimensions, slopes, and thickness of the slope protection to meet the conditions at the time of construction. No separate payment or adjustment in the unit price will be made as a result of these changes since the cost will be covered by payment for the total quantity of riprap stone, underlayer stone and armor stone placed at the contract price unit price.

3.3.3 Tolerances

Stone placed beyond the specified tolerances given will not be paid for.

Each layer shall be placed to the lines and grades shown on the drawings.

The various sizes and shapes shall be distributed such that satisfactory interlocking of the stones will be obtained. Contractor will account for settlement and ensure that design cross section is achieved.

3.3.4 Placement of Underlayer Material

The placement of the underlayer material must be accomplished in conjunction with the placement of the armor stone. The underlayer material shall be placed in such manner as to produce a well-graded mass of stone backfill. A tolerance of plus or minus 1 foot from the slope lines and grades shown on the drawings will be allowed in the finished surface of the underlayer material. The underlayer material shall be placed to provide a uniform base for the armor stone. The underlayer material shall be placed to its full thickness at one operation. The Contractor shall maintain the underlayer material until the armor stone is placed and any material displaced by any cause shall be replaced at his expense to the lines and grades shown on the drawings. During periods of construction work stoppage resulting from high flows, fish windows, etc., the Contractor is to take any precautions necessary to ensure that partially constructed rock fill areas, temporary piles, or rock stockpiles remain in place throughout the work stoppage.

3.3.5 Armor Stone Layer Placement

Two layers minimum of armor stone shall be placed on top of the underlayer material within the required placement limits shown on the drawings.

Additional armor stone thickness will be required where "pools" are to be constructed.Dropping of stones onto existing structures shall be strictly prohibited. The armor stone shall be so placed that the stones will form, as near as practicable, a compact mass and continuous cover for the underlayer stone. Armor stones shall be placed so as to be in contact with each other. A tolerance of plus or minus 1 foot vertical to the theoretical plane of surfaces will be allowed in the top and slopes of the armor stone.

SECTION 32 22 13.38 Page 10

3.3.6 Weir Stone Layer Placement

The weir stones are to be set to surface elevations shown and shall be located with the layout indicated on the drawings. Vertical tolerance in elevation for the set surface of weir stones shall be plus or minus four

(4) inches. Weir stones are to be set with a flatter surface on top and with that flatter surface roughly level. The weir stones are large and should extend one (1) foot above the 3.5%+ to 5%+ slope at the center of the channel. The large weir stones are approximately two (2) feet above the 3.5%+ to 5%+ finished surface slope at the edges of the channel and transition between the two. Large weir stones at the edge of the channel must be keyed into the placed armor stone or existing sideslope rock material so that the placed armor stone surface is between twelve (12") and eighteen (18") inches below the top of the weir stone. Where "pools" are proposed within the channel, weir stones are to be set with two (2) twelve-inch to eighteen-inch-wide (12" to 18") gaps for fish passage between adjacent weir stones. Two (2) gaps will be required upstream and two (2) will be required downstream for each "pool".

3.3.7 "Pool" Construction

Where noted on the plans in the center channel, roughly circular "pools" are to be formed by resetting armor stone material from "pool" centers and using the material to brace upstream and downstream faces of the rock arch weir stones. When completed the "pool" bottoms are to be approximately four (4) feet below the top of the adjacent upstream rock arch surface. In all cases, two (2) layers of (D50=27 inch) armor stone shall be maintained for protection of underlayer stone. Following shaping of the armor stone to form "pools", NCDOT Class A Riprap "Pool" Chinking stone is to be placed around the bottom of the "pools" to partially fill voids between armor stone pieces. Approximately 3 tons (+2 cubic yards) of NCDOT Class A Riprap "Pool" Chinking stone is to be placed within each pool for use in filling open voids. After larger voids have been filled, excess chinking stone is to be placed within the pool bottom and along the pool edges to fill voids. Plate D-19 shows details for construction of the "pools".

3.4 QUALITY CONTROL

3.4.1 General

The Contractor shall establish and maintain quality control for the riprap, underlayer stone, armor stone, and weir stone placement and all other operations in connection therewith to assure compliance with contract requirements. The Contractor shall inspect for compliance with contract requirements and record the inspection of all operations, including but not limited to the following:

a. Underlayer, armor stone, and weir stone complies with the specifications for quality and size and is placed to the lines and grades shown on the drawings within allowable tolerances.

b. All stone placed in a dense compact mass.

c. Stone marked for identification as to size and/or type and stockpiled in a manner to avoid contamination or segregation.

d. Rejected stone properly marked, disposed of properly, and all such transactions recorded.

SECTION 32 22 13.38 Page 11

3.4.2 Records

A copy of the records of inspections and reports of operations as well as any corrective actions taken shall be furnished to the Government as directed by the Contracting Officer.
