Municipal Water Line Extension W. Kerr Scott Reservoir

Aug. 31, 2009

Scope of Work

Provide all materials, supplies, equipment and labor necessary for the installation of new municipal water line of varying sizes, install three frost free hydrants, one spigot, two cut- off valves and valve boxes, and one bleeder valve across the W. Kerr Scott Dam to Fish Dam Creek Park and ending at Dark Mountain Park trailhead. The overall approximate footage of water line for this project is estimated to be 4,158 linear ft. on new water line as follows:

a. 2,008 feet of 2 inch SDR21 bell coupled gasket water line

b. 2,150 feet of 1 inch blacked rolled poly pipe, 200 psi rating

The work site is located within 1 mile of the Visitor Assistance Center located at

275 Reservoir Road, W. Kerr Scott Reservoir, Wilkes County, NC. Work to be performed is detailed as follows:

1. The water line install project must follow the routes and sizes as shown on

Illustration 1 attached. This route is generally described as follows:

2. Starting at a wooden stake marked as Stake # 1, located approximately 3 ft.

just south of Ranger Road and located on the south side of the dam structure connect into an exiting 2” SDR21 (bell coupled gasket water line) T section with new 2” SDR21 (bell coupled gasket water line). From this T, install new 2” SDRI water line proceeding approximately 85 feet across Ranger Road (estimate 25 ft. cut in asphalt required or bore underneath) and then run under existing guard rail to wooden stake marked as Stake # 2 on east side of the dam road. At a point approximately 40 ft. from the beginning point on the grass area install a shut off valve and box capable of completely shutting off the entire water line from that point north. Any asphalt road cuts would need to be repaired using a compatible commercial grade asphalt repair material.

3. From Stake # 2 continue with installing a 2” SDR21 water line (bell coupled gasket water line) generally centered between the edge of the asphalt road and guard rail and proceeding north approximately 1,718 feet across the dam to near the entrance of Fish Dam Creek Park to a wooden stake marked Stake #3.

4. From Stake #3, continuing with installing 2” SDR21 (bell coupled gasket water line) water line following a marked meandering path approximately 295 feet to a point located at a wooden stake marked as Stake #4 and generally located at the northeast corner of the Fish Dam Creek Picnic Shelter. This section will require the Contractor to cut or bore under two sections of existing concrete walkway approximately 4 ft. wide. At Stake #4 immediately reduce down from 2” SDRI to 200 psi 1” black rolled polypipe and install a 1-inch T intersection at this reduction.

5. From the 1-inch T heading east and within 1 foot of the T, install one 2 ft/ bury frost free Hydrant #1 (Woodbury frost free or equal approved by Contracting Officer’s Representative or COR) and continue on with installing 200 psi 1” black rolled polypipe approximately 150 feet to Stake #5 and install one 2 ft/ bury frost free Hydrant #2 (Woodbury frost free or equal approved by COR) at the end of the line.

6. From the 1-inch T at Stake 4, heading west continue on with installing 200 psi

1” black rolled polypipe following a marked meandering path down the hill approximately 2,100 feet to Stake #6 located at the Dark Mountain Park trailhead. At Stake 6, install a T connector. Within 1 ft. of T connector install a water spigot (model and make to be approved by COR) which is adequately attached to a 4” x 4” post approximately 3 ft high from ground level.

7. On the other side of the T connecter established at Stake 6, continue with 200 psi 1” black rolled polypipe following a marked path approximately 50 feet and install one 2 ft/ bury frost free Hydrant #3 (Woodbury frost free or equal approved by Contracting Officer’s Representative or COR). Within 2 foot of Hydrant #3, install an end-of-the-line bleeder valve with appropriate size gravel basin.

All footages found in this document are estimates and each potential bidder must estimate the actual footage between stakes from the beginning T to the ending point.

During the entire process, the Contractor must determine and provide all necessary and appropriately sized connectors between pipe sections and where necessary at angles or bends. All line must be installed at a minimum of 18 inches in depth. All cuts in ground areas must be refilled, raked flat, and re-seeded with fescue grass seed approved by the COR and mulched with wheat straw. All cuts across asphalt or concrete walkways must be repaired with comparable materials to the satisfaction of the COR. While working across the dam, the road system will be shut off from the public during work periods.

However, when work ends for the day the contractor must have the area safe and available for public use. No open pits or cuts are to be left overnight unless they are clearly marked with safety tape or other warning devices. All work is to be performed Monday – Friday to avoid weekend conflicts with visitors unless approved by the COR.

Before back filling open water line trenches, all water lines and connections must be pressure tested in the presence of the COR. All work must be guaranteed for at least one year from time of final billing. All work must be completed by January 15, 2010.
