Encls As stated

North Jetty Rehab, Silver Lake Harbor, Hyde County, NC & W912HN-09-B-0034 Breakwater Rehab, Smiths Creek, Pamlico County, NC

2.1.3 Underlayer Stone

Underlayer stone shall be granite/gneiss in accordance with subparagraph Granite/Gneiss. Underlayer stone shall meet the requirements of NCDOT Class 1 riprap.

2.1.4 Stone Size and Gradations

For the granite armor stone, the specified weight range shall be 1,000 to 3,000 lbs. per stone with 50% of the stone weighing more than 2,000-lbs.

The underlayer stone shall be NCDOT Class 1 with a range of 5 to 17 inches.

2.1.5 Stone Sources

The sources from which the Contractor proposes to obtain stone materials as required for the features in these specifications shall be selected and identified to the Contracting Officer well in advance of the time when the materials will be required in the work, a minimum of 20 days. The contractor shall select a source that produces stone specified in these specifications from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) approved producer/supplier list for course aggregate provided at the following internet site:

https://apps.dot.state.nc.us/vendor/approvedproducts/Producer.aspx

2.1.6 Stone Not Meeting The Specifications

If, during the progress of the work, it is found that the stone being furnished and/or placed by the Contractor does not meet all the requirements of the specifications, the Contractor shall be required to furnish other stone of a quality acceptable to the Contracting Officer. Any stone rejected at the site of work as not meeting the requirements of these specifications for quality, condition, size, or otherwise, shall be removed from the site by and at the expense of the Contractor. All stones which are broken during shipment to the work site or during placement shall be rejected. The Contractor shall dispose of all rejected stone in a manner approved by the Contracting Officer.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 PLACEMENT OF STONE

3.1.1 General

The contractor shall submit his proposed method of construction, to include the method of placement and equipment to be used to the Contracting Officer for approval. Care shall be taken to place the stone of various classifications so that they will form a compact mass, and form as nearly as practicable a cross-section of the height, width, and slopes as shown on the contract drawings. All stones shall be carefully placed so as to leave no large voids between them.

3.1.2 Minor Adjustments

Since the water depths and top of existing armor stone elevations shown on the drawings are subject to change by currents and waves, the Contracting Officer may make minor alterations in the plan limits, dimensions, slopes, and thickness of the slope protection to meet the conditions at the time of construction. No separate payment or adjustment in the unit price will be

SECTION 32 05 00.38 Page 3 (Revised by Amendment No. 0001) made as a result of these changes since the cost will be covered by payment for the total quantity of underlayer stone and armor stone placed at the contract price unit price.

3.1.3 Tolerances

Stone placed beyond the specified tolerances given will not be paid for.

Each layer shall be placed to the lines and grades shown on the drawings.

Each stone in each layer shall be lowered to rest before being released.

The various sizes and shapes shall be distributed such that satisfactory interlocking of the stones will be obtained. Contractor will account for settlement and ensure that design cross section is achieved. A tolerance of plus or minus 6 inches vertical to the theoretical plane of surfaces will be allowed in the top and slopes of the armor stone.

3.1.4 Armor Stone Layer Placement

One layer of armor stone shall be placed over the required placement limits shown on the drawings. Each armor stone unit shall be lowered to rest before being released and placed to the satisfaction of the Contracting Officer. Dropping of stones onto the structure shall be strictly prohibited. The armor stone shall be so placed that the stones will form, as near as practicable, a compact mass and continuous cover for the existing stone. Armor stones shall be placed so as to be in contact with each other and interlocked with the existing stone.

3.1.5 Placement of Underlayer Material

The placement of the underlayer material must be accomplished in conjunction with the placement of the armor stone at the Silver Lake Harbor jetty. The underlayer material shall be placed in such manner as to produce a reasonably well-graded mass of stone. A tolerance of plus or minus three (3) inches from the slope lines and grades shown on the drawings will be allowed in the finished surface of the underlayer material, except that either extreme of such tolerance shall not be continuous over an area greater than 200 square feet. The underlayer material shall be placed to fill in gaps within the existing armor stone to provide a uniform base for the new armor stone and also placed to extend beyond the limits of the existing visible armor stone to provide a 1-foot thick minimum layer as shown on the drawings. Placement of underlayer stone on top of the existing armor stone may be required in some areas to ensure the new armor stone layer satisfies the required lines and grades shown on the drawings. The underlayer material shall be placed to its full thickness at one operation. The Contractor shall maintain the underlayer material until the armor stone is placed and any material displaced by any cause shall be replaced at his expense to the lines and grades shown on the drawings.

3.2 QUALITY CONTROL

3.2.1 General

The Contractor shall establish and maintain quality control for the armor stone and underlayer stone placement and all other operations in connection therewith to assure compliance with contract requirements. The Contractor shall inspect for compliance with contract requirements and record the inspection of all operations, including but not limited to the following:

a. Armor and underlayer stone complies with the specifications for

SECTION 32 05 00.38 Page 4 quality and size and is placed to the lines and grades shown on the drawings within allowable tolerances.

b. All stone placed in a dense compact mass.

c. Stone marked for identification as to size and/or type and stockpiled in a manner to avoid contamination or segregation.

d. Rejected stone properly marked, disposed of properly, and all such transactions recorded.

3.2.2 Records

A copy of the records of inspections and reports of operations as well as any corrective actions taken shall be furnished to the Government as directed by the Contracting Officer.
