- Culverts and storm piping shall be reinforced concrete having a minimum diameter of 380mm unless approval is obtained otherwise.
2.8.9 Utilities
There are several utilities crossing the project’s construction site. It is the contractor’s responsibility to obtain accordant maps from the relevant authorities and owners and to verify the existing conditions on site. The contractor shall take action in accordance with section 2.8.3 in case of existent utilities interfering with the construction works required for this project.
The COR shall be notified of any utility lines that are found to be missing from or incorrectly shown on any existing plans showing existing conditions that were made available to the contractor. Indication of existing utility lines on such plans shall not mean the existence, location, depth and/or alignment of the lines is accurately represented.
The contractor is responsible for the protection of those lines that are to be kept in operation. If utilities are damaged by the contractor, it shall be at the contractor’s expense
New collector utility lines shall not be located within 3 meters of the footprint of any existing or future building on the site. Placement of a buried utility main (new or existing) under a new structure shall not be allowed. Existing lines shall be relocated as necessary to comply with the above requirements.
Any required utility relocation shall be designed and constructed in compliance with the applicable Host Nation Standards and in consideration of additional owner specific requirements.
2.8.9.1 Utility Trenches
Provide utility trenches for all required underground utilities to a frost-free depth. Utilities shall lie far enough below the surface so as not to be damaged by the expected vehicular/pedestrian traffic passing over that area. This shall be designed in accordance with the Applicable Design and Construction Documents Section of these SOW. Pipe depths, bedding, and cover shall be as required by appropriate local criteria. Warning tape shall be placed above each new/relocated utility line, 30 cm below finished grade. Trench backfill shall be with appropriate compactable soil materials and shall be compacted in layers of about 30cm each to at least 95% maximum density. Density tests shall be conducted by the contractor in accordance with the technical specifications. As a minimum, tests shall be conducted for 1 per 200 square meters. The COR shall be notified before backfilling of pits and trenches is going to be performed.
Only gravelly and sandy non-cohesive materials shall be considered satisfactory for fill and backfill, with the provisos that in any soil type the maximum particle, size does not exceed 75 mm, the plasticity index is not greater than 30, the soil is not frozen nor contaminated, and the soil contains neither trash, debris nor organic material.
Other more cohesive soil types (with the same restrictions regarding particle size, etc.) may be used in green areas, however not beneath structures or pavements. In case of a difference of opinion about the classification of soil type acceptability, an independent professional soils engineer shall be engaged at cost to the contractor.
The COR has the right to require that sheeting be improved if the sheeting measures provided by the contractor are deemed insufficient in terms of safety. This improvement shall be at the contractor's cost if the original contractor's measures did not meet the requirements of applicable safety criteria.
