CONTRACTOR QUESTION
Question: The contract calls for the Contractor to reposition rootballs, but if not feasible, "the root-ball should be removed from the site." Does this mean to haul off the intact rootball, or can we grind it before removing it?
ANS: IF THE ROOTBALLS CANNOT BE REPOSITIONED, THEY MUST BE REMOVED.
FOLLOWING REMOVAL, THEY CAN BE HAULED OFF-SITE INTACT, OR GROUND AND
THEN THE CHIPS, DETRIS AND DEBRIS MUST BE HAULED OFF SITE AND DISPOSED OF
OFF SITE.
Question: What is meant by "filter fabric" when a rootball is removed? ("Sediments should be covered with filter fabric and then covered with fill...") Do you have a product in mind?
ANS: EITHER FILTER FABRIC OR LANDSCAPING FABRIC IS ACCEPTABLE.
REVISE PARAGRAPH 3C
c. Repositioning of Root-balls: All dislodged root-balls shall be returned to their original position with minimal disturbance of soil.
If it is not feasible to return the root-ball to its original position, the root-ball shall be removed from the site. The rootball may be hauled off site intact, or may be ground before removal from the site. Prior to removal, sediments adhering to exposed roots should be removed. Techniques such as manual vibration or machine assisted shaking shall be utilized to remove these sediments. Sediments should be covered with filter fabric and then covered with fill from a borrow source outside of the campground. Fill may not be excavated within the boundaries of the Corps property. The COR shall be notified and must give his or her concurrence before removal of rootballs.
