West Indian Manatee (Threatened)

Concerns Year-round activity in Flamingo Marinas Attracted to freshwater outflows – drink from pipes in marina Often present with calves Very slow moving

Risks Accustomed to humans = vulnerable to injury from equipment

Contractor Requirements If a manatee comes within 50 ft, shut down all in-water work Idle vessel engines when manatees are nearby Report any collision/injury immediately Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission Everglades National Park Law Enforcement

Information Year-round activity in Flamingo Marinas Dorsal fins often mistaken for sharks or dolphins Juveniles use mangrove prop roots for shelter Eggs/juveniles found in seagrass Highly sensitive to water quality Entire Flamingo Marina = designated critical habitat

Risks Turbidity breaches can injure or kill eggs and juveniles Adults and juveniles are vulnerable to injury or death from equipment

Contractor Requirements Use turbidity curtains during all sediment-producing activities Prevent spills, discharge, and sediment plumes If observed within 50 ft, shut down all in-water work Report all sightings (alive or dead) to Biological Resources Chief (or delegate)

Information Year-round activity in Flamingo Marinas Return to same area annually to breed Courtship: March Nesting: April–August Hatchlings in vicinity: June–September Entire Flamingo Marina = designated critical habitat

Risks (expect presence and territorial behavior) History of nesting along bulkhead walls Nests are not easily identifiable Adults + hatchlings may be near equipment, walking or basking on pavement or grass, exploring excavations Accustomed to human activity but still dangerous Readily utilize disturbed sandy soils for nesting

Contractor Requirements Cover all excavations nightly Inspect pits/equipment each morning for entrapped animals Stay clear of all crocodiles — do not push, corner, or haze Follow NPS nest flagging and avoidance buffers Construction schedules may be adjusted to avoid nests
