GEOTECHNICAL DATA REPORT
1. Scope
The geotechnical field and laboratory data available for this project are provided in this section. Explorations consisted of borings, test pits, hand augers, double ring infiltration tests, muck probes and aquifer performance tests. The associated boring logs and laboratory data are presented in paragraphs 5.5 and 5.6, respectively. A character of materials paragraph provides a description of the materials based on recent and historical knowledge of the project area. Also included in this section are definitions of terms and boring log notes, which provide additional information on the boring logs and drilling techniques.
During the solicitation period, questions that pertain to the information provided in this section should be addressed to the contract specialist identified in Block 9 of SF1442. After contract award, questions should be addressed to the appointed ACO/COR, which will coordinate with Geotechnical Branch.
2. Project Background
The Broward County Water Preserve Area (BCWPA) is part of the much larger Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) with the objective to restore the ecological health of the Everglades.
The BCWPA C-11 Impoundment is one feature of the overall BCWPA project. It is located along the eastern edge of the Everglades ecosystem within the drainage basin of the C-11 Canal. Project features include construction of new dam(s), levee(s), canal(s), pump station, water control structures, communication tower, equestrian and pedestrian bridges, and stilling wells; backfilling the Central Lake and borrow area; and protecting a cultural resource area. Plate 1 shows the project vicinity map.
3. Character of Materials
3.1 Regional and Local Geology
The project site is located between the eastern edge of the Water Conservation Area 3A and the city of Weston in Broward County, Florida. The Everglades are developed on a flat plain with low relief that slopes gently to the south-southwest. The surficial material within the project area typically consists of a sandy, organic rich, peat and muck. The underlying geologic formations generally consist of alternating marine sand, shell, and limestone layers of Quaternary age to a depth of approximately 70 to 80 feet below ground surface (bgs).
The Quaternary marine deposits are named the Fort Thompson Formation, and these permeable sediments include the Biscayne Aquifer. Underlying the Fort Thompson Formation is the Tamiami Formation, which is composed of marine limestone, sand, and clays of Pliocene age. The Tamiami Formation is underlain by the uppermost Hawthorn Group sediments that consist of silicate and carbonate sand, silt, and clay, and serve as the

3.2 Materials Encountered
One-hundred forty-seven (147) Standard Penetration Test (SPT) borings were originally completed for the C-11 Impoundment site followed by an additional six (6) supplemental borings. At many of these drilling locations, rock coring was advanced in a companion boring. Drilling and sampling depths ranged from 15 to 100 feet below ground surface.
Supplemental borings were extended to greater depths (50-200 ft bgs) and provided geotechnical information for planned deep foundations. Disturbed samples recovered from the SPT borings and one undisturbed Shelby Tube sample were field identified and packaged by USACE field personnel. SPT boring locations are presented in Table 5-1, below.
Additionally, in total, 214 muck probes and 25 infiltration tests were performed to aide in the classification of the surficial soils. Please note that the term “muck probe” is a common local term for the test method described below and does not necessarily mean that muck or organic soils were encountered. Table 5-3 and Table 5-5 below present the locations of the muck probe and infiltration test locations, respectively.
In general terms, the subsurface conditions throughout the site consist of relatively thin surficial organic and silty sand soil deposits. However, in some locations the surficial organic soils have been replaced with fill material or was nonexistent. The upper stratum ranged from 0 to 6 feet thick and is underlain by interbedded layers of limestone with varying degrees of cementation. The limestone is underlain by siliceous sands with varying amounts of silt and shell fragments extending to depths in excess of 30 feet below the ground surface (bgs). In some locations, typically along the southern and western alignments, a second limestone layer was encountered, generally below 30 feet bgs. Although the general material classifications of the encountered soils and limestone are relatively consistent, the individual strata depths, thicknesses and consistencies can vary significantly across the site.
Additionally, the ground water table across the site averaged approximately elevation 3.0 feet NAVD88. The following sections provide further details on the materials encountered at the site.
The surficial soil layer consisted of either a soft organic silty to clayey peat, a loose to medium dense silty sand or a fill material. The peat is a mixture of organic material, fine-grained sand, and silt. It was described as moist, brown to black in color, soft and mostly organic with variable sand contents. The surficial sandy material is mostly fine-grained and subangular with some silt and trace organic matter. It was often described as moist, tan to dark brown in color, loose to dense in relative density, slightly silty to silty fine sand with occasional limestone fragments or organics. The fill consists of fine to coarse gravel-sized carbonates and fine to medium-grained quartz sand. The presence of fill on the site appears to be limited. (USCS classification: PT/ CL / OH / SP-SM / SM)
Underlying the surficial soils was a variable upper limestone layer. The upper limestone layer was often encountered within the upper five to 20 feet of the borings; however, it was not identified in some borings. The upper limestone was typically described as white to grey, weathered to highly weathered, very soft to moderately hard, fossiliferous limestone with silt and fine sands. In some locations, the limestone was noted as vuggy or slightly to highly fractured. Few instances of voids were noted within the boring logs. The largest was identified in boring CP21-BCWPA-CB-09, which encountered a three-foot void within the

(USC(USC tthehe upper limestone, from nine to eleven feet bgs. Reduced drill fluid circulation was noted in several boring logs within the limestone layers, particularly along the southeastern portion of the project site. The upper limestone varied in cementation and hardness as indicated on the boring log notes. The rock quality designation (RQD) as well as the percent recovery (Rec%) values recorded for recovered rock core samples ranged from 0% to 100%. Where rock cores were recovered and tested, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) ranged from 320 to 7,380 psi.
Below the upper limestone layer, most borings terminated in a silty sand layer. This lower granular layer typically extended from 20 to 35 feet bgs and was described as light grey to dark brown in color, wet, loose to dense in relative density, poorly graded sand with trace silt to a silty sand, with limestone and shell fragments. The lower silty sand layer was characterized by Standard Penetration Test (SPT) blow counts ranging from two blows per foot to refusal (characterized by greater than 50 blows per six inches). (USCS classification:
SP/SM)
For borings that extended through the lower silty sand layer described above, they typically encountered a lower limestone layer. This lower limestone layer typically began around 30 to 35 feet bgs and extended to the boring termination depth, usually around 50 feet bgs. The limestone in this zone was described as fossiliferous, white to tan in color, unweathered to moderately weathered, very soft to very hard limestone with some sand and shell pockets. A similar range of RQD values were recorded for the lower limestone layer, however the lower limestone generally appeared slightly less weathered.
The supplemental borings typically encountered the same general stratigraphy that was previously identified within the upper 50 feet across the site. Two of the six deeper supplemental borings, CP21-BCWPA-CB-08 and CP21-BCWPA-CB-10, both encountered a deeper fine-grained material that was not previously identified. CP21-BCWPA-CB-08, encountered a stiff layer of medium plastic silt from 90 to 102.5 feet bgs. It was described as a grey, inorganic medium plastic silt with some limestone fragments (USCS classification:
ML) and SPT N values ranging from 10 to 15 blows per foot. One undisturbed Shelby tube sample was recovered from this layer for laboratory testing. Additionally, CP21-BCWPA- CB-10, encountered a stiff clay layer from 185 to 198.5 feet bgs. This layer was described as a lean, low plasticity olive grey clay with little silt and little to fine to medium sized carbonates, which overlaid a fat, high plasticity, dry, olive grey clay with little fine to medium grained sand sized carbonates. SPT N blow counts within this deep clay layer ranged from 15 to 29 blows per foot. (USCS Classification: CL/CH).
Table 3-1 below presents a brief summary of the identified material within the upper 50 feet of the stratigraphy across the C-11 site. Additionally, Table 5-9 below presents the results of the corrosion series testing performed on soil samples recovered from the site.

4. Definitions
Definitions for geologic and geotechnical terms are provided in the sections below. For other terms not defined below, typical industry standard definitions were used, as given in the applicable ASTM standards.
4.1 Definitions of Basic Terms
Carbonate – Soil component that reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) of an indeterminate origin (shell, rock, etc.).
Fill – Material that has been placed by man, described with all soil characteristics.
Layer – Rock or soil with a thickness of 6 inches or more.
Lens – A geologic deposit of variable thickness, which disappears laterally in all directions and cannot be correlated to adjacent borings.
Rock – A naturally occurring substance composed of one or more minerals bound together.
This geologic term includes a range of engineering properties: strength, hardness, permeability, weathering, and discontinuity. These properties are noted or can be inferred from the boring logs as blow counts, penetration rate, RQD, hardness, etc.
