GEOTECHNICAL DATA REPORT

1 SCOPE

The information provided in this section encompasses the geotechnical field investigations available for this project. The investigations consist of borings. The associated boring logs and laboratory data are presented in paragraphs 5.6 and 5.7, respectively. A character of materials paragraph is included to provide a comprehensive description of the materials utilizing historical knowledge of the project area. Also included in this section are definitions of terms and boring log notes, which provide additional explanation of the boring logs and drilling techniques.

Items discussed in the character of materials paragraph may not appear explicitly on the boring logs. Based on historic knowledge of the project area, the character of materials paragraph includes items that supplement the data documented by the boring logs. When reviewing the boring logs, use all of the data on the logs, including the materials description, legend, and blow counts. When evaluating the subsurface conditions, use all of the data, including the character of materials paragraph and boring logs.

During the solicitation period, any questions that pertain to the information provided in this section should be addressed to the contract specialist identified in Block 9 of SF1442. After contract award, questions should be addressed to the appointed ACO/COR, which will coordinate with Geotechnical Branch.

2 CHARACTER OF MATERIALS

2.1 THE LOCAL GEOLOGY

Horseshoe Cove is a shallow, relatively protected area adjacent to the town of Horseshoe Beach, in Dixie County, Florida, in the embayed northwest portion of the Florida peninsula. The coastline of Dixie County is a part of a low energy coast formed on a partly drowned limestone plateau peninsula. The limestones of Dixie county are permeable and porous, bioclastic, Upper Eocene rocks of the Inglis Formation, Williston Formation and the Crystal River Formation (the Ocala Group), and older sediments. Soluble limestones are present at the surface or are overlain by an even thinner cover of loose Pleistocene sand. There is an appreciable amount of dolomitic limestone, of Upper Eocene age, along the coastal and western margins of Dixie County. Clay or other impervious sediments are practically nonexistent above the Ocala bedrock.

2.2 MATERIALS ENCOUNTERED

Historical information from previous core borings and past dredging events was used to characterize the material. The material to be excavated is shoal material that has deposited since the area was last dredged. No new core borings were drilled to characterize the materials for the current maintenance dredging. Earlier shoaling was predominately sand, silt, and clay. The material also contains variable amounts of shell and shell fragments. Some residual loose rock and gravel deposits, left from initial construction dredging, may be encountered in thin layers.

Rock occurs at or near grade in many parts of the project. In situ rock, if encountered, is not required to be dredged. The previous maintenance dredging event encountered debris, including trash, rope, chain, cable, tires, and miscellaneous scrap metal that may also be encountered in this dredging event.

3 DEFINITIONS

Definitions not explicitly indicated in the sections below are typical industry standard definitions from their respective ASTMs.

3.1 DEFINITIONS OF BASIC TERMS

Carbonate – Soil component that reacts with HCl of an indeterminate origin (shell, rock, etc.).

Fill – Material that has been placed by man, described with all soil characteristics.

Layer – Rock or soil with a thickness of 6 inches or less.

Lens – A geologic deposit of variable thickness, which disappears laterally in all directions and cannot be correlated to adjacent borings.

Rock – A naturally occurring substance composed of one or more minerals bound together. This geologic term includes a range of engineering properties: strength, hardness, permeability, weathering, and discontinuity. These properties are noted or can be inferred from the boring logs as blow counts, penetration rate, RQD, hardness, etc.

Shell – Material composed of predominantly (>75%) coarse-grained sand to gravel-sized whole or broken shell.

4.6 BORING LOGS

Applicable boring logs are presented on the following pages.

The borings presented in this section are available historic borings within the project area. Most of the materials within the project template presented on the boring logs have been removed by previous dredging events with subsequent shoaling of similar materials. The current elevations of the materials at these locations are shown on the contract drawings.

While the Government’s borings are representative of subsurface conditions at their respective locations and vertical reaches, local variations in the characteristics of the subsurface materials of this region are to be expected.

SECTION 00 33 50 WEATHER AND WATER STAGE DATA

1. The following water stage, wave, wind, and weather data are provided for inclusion into the subject Plans and Specifications. The following water level datums are provided for information only and are not to be utilized in conjunction with any contract related hydrographic surveying.

a) Water Stages. Water levels in the project area are mainly affected by wind and tidal fluctuations of the Gulf of Mexico which are mixed (diurnal and semi-diurnal). The project area is also subject to storm surges from hurricanes and tropical storms from June through November.

Surges from extratropical storms may affect the area during any time of the year.

Elevations of tidal datums in the vicinity of the project area are provided in the following tables.

All datum elevations in these tables are referred to mean lower low water (MLLW). These datums are taken from a tide station near the project site, station 8727648 (Horseshoe Point, FL).

The Horseshoe Beach station is based on a six month (01 July 1978 to 31 December 1978) record of data and a control tide station located in Cedar Key, FL. Data is based on the 1983- 2001 tidal epoch. This tide station was established by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Ocean Service (NOS) and are applicable within the project vicinity. Additional information on these and other nearby tide stations is available at this NOAA website: https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/stations.html?type=Datums

Daily tidal predictions at locations along the coastline of North and South America, including locations in the vicinity of the project area can be found in the publication East Coast of North and South America Tide Tables, U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Ocean Service.

In addition to daily tidal predictions, this publication provides mean and spring tide ranges and mean tide levels. Some astronomical data is also included, such as time of sunrise, sunset, moonrise, and moonset. This publication is available through NOAA. Tidal data provided in this publication can also be found at the following NOAA website:

https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/tide_predictions.html.

b) Wind and Wave Data. The following publications include wind and wave information in the vicinity of the project area, and are available for review in the Jacksonville District Office or may be ordered directly from the agencies indicated.

1. U.S. Coast Pilot Volume 5, Atlantic Coast: Gulf of Mexico, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands, U.S. Department of Commerce, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Ocean Service. This publication supplements the navigational information shown on the NOAA/NOS nautical charts, and also provides miscellaneous meteorological data. This publication can be purchased through NOAA, and is available

2. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory, Wave Information Study (WIS) Database. This Internet webpage presents wave hindcast data for various stations located along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coastlines within the United States. The closest of these stations (#73232) lies approximately 6.5 miles west of the project site. Available data includes a hindcast time series of wave heights, periods, and directions taken at 1-hour intervals for the 24-year period extending from 1980-2014, at a station located in 5 meters (16.4 feet) of water. This webpage also provides links to WIS summary tables and plots, as well as other sources of wave data. These data products are available at the following website:

http://wis.usace.army.mil.

3. National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) Website. This Internet website provides a wide range of real-time and archived meteorological and oceanographic data collected at offshore and nearshore stations worldwide. Data provided on this website includes wind speed, wind gusts, atmospheric pressure, air temperature, sea temperature, wave height, and wave period. Gage readings are updated hourly, and archived data is available for most stations. The website address for data relevant to this project site is: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/Florida.shtml.

c) Weather Conditions. The project area is subject to tropical storms and hurricanes from June through November, and to windy and/or rainy weather during any time of the year.

The climate of the area is essentially tropical, and temperatures below freezing are rare. The wet season in the project area is from May through October. Rainfall during these months is closely associated with convective activity. These rainfall events are normally of short duration and amounts are spatially variable. In general, the winter months constitute the dry season. Rainfall during the winter months is usually associated with mid-latitude systems (fronts and low pressure systems) and is distributed in a more spatially uniform pattern. Occasionally, daily rainfall in the dry season can be quite heavy as mid-latitude systems penetrate into central Florida. Dangerous thunderstorms can occur in this area at any time of the year.

It shall be the contractor's responsibility to obtain information concerning weather conditions in the project area. The Climate Data Online website http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/ published by NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (formerly the National Climatic Data Center) in Asheville, North Carolina contains climatological and meteorological observations and data relevant to this region. Available data includes quality controlled daily, monthly, seasonal, and yearly measurements of temperature, precipitation, wind, and degree days as well as radar data and 30-year climate normals.

The Summary of Monthly Normals product available at the following web link provides monthly average values for temperature, precipitation, and other information. The Cross City Airport, http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/Florida.shtml

Florida, and Sea Hag Marina, FL NOAA stations in proximity to the project location provides a Summary of Monthly Normals over the period of record from 1981 through 2010. The Cross City station is located inland at latitude 29.63333° N, longitude 83.10528° W while the Sea Hag Marina station is located north of the project area, but on the Gulf of Mexico at latitude 29.67111° N, longitude 83.38833° W. Data can be accessed through:
