1.1 SCOPE

The information provided in this section encompasses the geotechnical field investigations available for this project. The investigations consist of borings. The associated boring logs and laboratory data are presented in sections 1.4.5 and 1.4.6, respectively. A character of materials section is included to provide a comprehensive description of the materials utilizing both recent and historical knowledge of the project area. Also included are definitions of terms which may be found in the boring log notes, which provide additional explanation of the boring logs and drilling techniques. A section listing the ASTM testing methodology for a named test procedure is also included.

Items discussed in the character of materials paragraph may not appear explicitly on the boring logs. Based on historic knowledge of the project area, the character of materials section includes information that supplements the data documented by the boring logs. When reviewing the boring logs, use all of the data on the logs, including the materials description, legend, and blow counts. When evaluating the subsurface conditions, use all of the data, including the character of materials section and boring logs.

During the solicitation period, any questions that pertain to the information provided in this section should be addressed to the contract specialist identified in Block 9 of SF1442. After contract award, questions should be addressed to the appointed ACO/COR, which will coordinate with Geotechnical Branch.

1.2 CHARACTER OF MATERIALS

1.2.1 Local Geology

The Kings Bay Entrance Channel (St. Mary's Inlet/Fernandina Harbor) separates Cumberland Island to the north from Amelia Island to the south and is part of southeast Georgia and northeast Florida coastal plain.

Surficial sediments composed of sands, shell, soft silts and clays are

Holocene (present to 12k years Before Present (BP)) and Pleistocene (12k to 1.8 Million Years ago (Mya)) in age. These surficial sediments represent barrier island and marsh/lagoon facies of numerous shoreline complexes. Sparse Pliocene (1.8 Mya to 5.3 Mya) siliciclatics underlie these Pleistocene sediments. Extensive deposits of the Miocene (5.3 Mya to 23.8 Mya) aged Hawthorn Group lie just under most surficial sediments in the Kings Bay Entrance Channel. The composition of the Hawthorn Group is highly variable reflecting different depositional environments and repeated reworking of the sediment in response to sea level fluctuations on the shallow water shelf. The lithologies of the Hawthorn Group include limestone, dolomite, clay, and quartz sands with a notable quantity of phosphorite.

U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay Maintenance Dredging Entrance Channel, Cut-1N Through Range-E, 49, 45, and 44-Foot Project

00 31 32 - 4W912EP-16-B-0010

1.2.2 Materials Encountered

The Kings Bay Entrance Channel has been dredged to the maximum authorized depth with allowable over-depth multiple times over the life of the project. The most recent dredging of the Kings Bay Entrance

Channel occurred last year. Therefore, all shoaled materials are newly deposited in the channel through normal coastal processes occurring in and around inlets. As such, all of the recent vibracore logs were collected prior to the last dredging event, but are representative of the shoaled material.

The shallow sediments on the upland adjacent to Kings Bay Naval

Submarine Base are typified as fine to medium-grained sands interbedded with silty and/or clayey fine sands that extend to a depth of at least

50 feet below ground level. It is anticipated that these upland materials will also be present in the shoaled maintenance dredging areas within Range C to Range E.

Rock in the allowable over depth areas may or may not have been previously dredged as part of a continuous maintenance program. If encountered, in situ rock is not required to be dredged.

1.2.2.1 Entrance Channel, Cut 1-N, Station 00+00 to Station 100+00

The shoaled materials in this portion of the Entrance Channel consist of fine to medium sand-sized quartz and minor silt with varying amounts of sand to gravel-sized shell fragments.

The western portion of this reach of the channel was originally excavated in rock; therefore, rock fragments could be encountered when dredging to the lower elevations. Any in-situ rock, if encountered, is not required to be dredged. Additionally, occasional beds of oyster shells were encountered during historical explorations.

1.2.2.2 Entrance Channel, Cut 1-N, Station 100+00 to Station 200+00

The shoaled materials in this portion of the channel and settling basin consist predominately of poorly graded, fine to medium sand-sized quartz with minor silt and varying amounts of sand to gravel-sized shell fragments. Materials that shoal in this area have been placed on the beach for numerous annual dredging cycles.

1.2.2.3 Entrance Channel, Cut 1-N, Station 200+00 to Station 370+00

The shoaled material in this portion of the channel are highly variable in composition and has historically been placed in the ODMDS. It has been determined that the material does not consistently meet beach/nearshore quality criteria. Shoaled materials vary from poorly-graded, medium to fine sand-sized quartz to silty sand, silt, and clay with few shell fragments. Whole and broken angular shell fragments vary from sand to gravel-size greater than 3”.

00 31 32 - 5W912EP-16-B-0010

1.2.2.4 North Settling Basin, Entrance Channel, Cut 1-N

The shoaled materials in this portion of the north settling basin are predominately poorly graded, fine to medium sand-size quartz with medium sand-sized to gravel-sized quartz.

1.2.2.5 South Settling Basin, Entrance Channel, Cut 1-N

The shoaled materials in this portion of the south settling basin ranges from poorly-graded to silty sand, fine sand-sized quartz with silt and fine sand-sized to gravel-sized shell fragments.

1.2.2.6 North Turning Basin, Entrance Channel, Cut 1-N

The shoaled material in this portion of the north turning basin is predominately poorly graded, fine sand-sized to gravel-sized shell fragments with fine to medium sand-sized quartz.

1.2.2.7 South Turning Basin, Entrance Channel, Cut 1-N

The shoaled material in this portion of the south turning basin is predominately poorly graded, fine to medium sand-sized shell fragments with fine to medium-sized sand-sized quartz. Hard limestone rests below the shoaled materials between -45 to -47 feet MLLW.

1.2.2.8 Range A, Inner Entrance Channel, Station 0+000 to Station 8+000

The shoaled material in this portion of the channel is predominately fine to medium-grained sand-size quartz with minor sand to gravel-sized shell.

Very Soft (Hardness) - Can be deformed by hand (has a rock-like character, but can be easily broken by hand).

Very Tight (Fracture Aperture) - less than 0.004" (0.1 mm).

Very Wide (Fracture Aperture) - 0.394" (10 mm) to 0.984" (25 mm).

Vuggy - Voids 0.236" (6mm) to the diameter of the core.

1.3.3 Previous Logging Terms

Definition of terms used on boring logs dated before 2000:

Dense – Equivalent to SPT N-value of 30 to 50.

Incompetent – Rock that disintegrates while coring; weak.

Indurated – Rock or soil hardened or consolidated by pressure or cementation. Very difficult to break by hand.

Poorly-Indurated – See semi-indurated.

Seam – Rock or soil with average thickness of 2 to 3 inches.

Semi-Indurated – Rock or soil with a lesser degree of hardening or consolidation by pressure or cementation. Crumbles with little effort by hand.
