PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 BATCHING AND MIXING CONCRETE
3.1.1 General
The batching and mixing equipment and procedures shall conform to the applicable provisions of ASTM C 94, except as otherwise specified. These requirements apply to both off-site and on-site measuring, batching, and mixing of concrete. The mixers shall not be charged in excess of the capacity recommended by the manufacturer. The mixers shall be operated at the drum or mixing blade speed designated by the manufacturer. The mixers shall be maintained in satisfactory operating condition, and the mixer drums shall be kept free of hardened concrete. Should any mixer at any time produce unsatisfactory results, its use shall be promptly discontinued until it is repaired.
3.1.2 Batch Ticket Information
The producer shall record the batching information for the concrete in accordance with ASTM C 94, Section 16, "Batch Ticket Information." The ticket must accompany the representative batch of concrete to the point of placement and be given to the Contracting Officer prior to placement of that batch of concrete. In the event the Contracting Officer or Contracting Officer's Representative is not at the site at the time of delivery, the batch tickets must be delivered or mailed to the Contracting Officer within 24 hours after delivery of the concrete.
3.2 PREPARATIONS
Surfaces against which concrete is to be placed shall be clean, damp, and free from frost, ice, and standing or running water. Gravel or aggregate foundations shall be compacted prior to placement of concrete.
3.2.1 Embedded Items
Before placing concrete, care shall be taken to determine that all embedded items are firmly and securely fastened in place as indicated on the drawings, or required. Embedded items shall be free of oil and other foreign matter such as loose coatings of rust, paint, and scale. The embedding of wood in concrete will be permitted only when specifically authorized or directed. Voids in sleeves, inserts, and anchor slots shall be filled temporarily with readily removable materials to prevent the entry of concrete into the voids.
3.2.2 Sawcutting Concrete Slabs
Sawcutting shall be performed at the locations and to the depths shown on
SECTION 03 30 50.00 28
the contract drawings. The sawcuts shall be done using a diamond-bladed saw. Sawcuts shall be straight and uniform. Excess concrete shall be disposed of as specified.
3.3 CONVEYING
Concrete shall be conveyed from mixer to forms as rapidly as practicable and within the time interval in paragraph: Time Interval Between Mixing and Placing by methods which will prevent segregation or loss of ingredients. Any concrete transferred from one conveying device to another shall be passed through a hopper which is conical in shape and shall not be dropped vertically more than 5 feet, except where suitable equipment is provided to prevent segregation and where specifically authorized.
3.4 PLACING
3.4.1 General
Concrete placement will not be permitted when, in the opinion of the Contracting Officer, weather conditions prevent proper placement and consolidation. Concrete shall be deposited as close as possible to its final position in the forms, and in so depositing there shall be no vertical drop greater than 5 feet except where suitable equipment is provided to prevent segregation and where specifically authorized.
Depositing of the concrete shall be so regulated that it may be effectively consolidated in horizontal layers 16 inches or less in thickness with a minimum of lateral movement. The amount deposited in each location shall be that which can be readily and thoroughly consolidated. Free water shall be removed prior to placement of concrete. Sufficient placing capacity shall be provided so that concrete placement can be kept plastic and free of cold joints while concrete is being placed.
3.4.2 Time Interval Between Mixing and Placing
Concrete shall be placed within 30 minutes after discharge into nonagitating equipment. When concrete is truck mixed or when a truck mixer or agitator is used for transporting concrete mixed by a concrete plant mixer, the concrete shall be delivered to the site of the work and discharge shall be completed within 1-1/2 hours after introduction of the cement to the aggregates. When the concrete temperature exceeds 85 F, the placement shall be completed within 45 minutes, except if an approved dosage of retarder is used, then placement shall be completed within 1-1/2 hours
3.4.3 Cold-Weather Placing
The ambient temperature of the space adjacent to the concrete placement and surfaces to receive concrete shall be above 32 F. The placing temperature of the concrete having a minimum dimension less than 304.8mm (12 inches) shall be between 60 F. and 75 F. The placing temperature of the concrete having a minimum dimension greater than 12 inches shall be between 50 F and 75 F. Heating of the mixing water or aggregates will be required to regulate the concrete placing temperatures. Materials entering the mixer shall be free from ice, snow, or frozen lumps. Salt, chemicals, or other materials shall not be mixed with the concrete to prevent freezing. An approved non-corrosive, non-chloride accelerator may be used.
SECTION 03 30 50.00 28
3.5 CONSOLIDATION
Immediately after placing, concrete shall be consolidated by a combination of rodding, spading, and internal vibrating. Vibrators shall not be used to transport concrete within the forms. Rodding and hand spading shall be performed along formed surfaces permanently exposed to view. Form or surface vibrators shall not be used. Vibrators of the proper size, frequency, and amplitude shall be used for the type of work. The vibrator shall be inserted vertically at uniform spacing over the entire area of placement. The distance between insertions shall be approximately one and one-half times the radius of action of the vibrator. The vibrator shall penetrate rapidly to the bottom of the layer and at least 6 inches into the preceding layer if such exists. It shall be held stationary until the concrete is consolidated and then withdrawn slowly. Care shall be taken to avoid contact with the form liner with the vibrator head.
3.6 FINISHING
Concrete shall be edged with an edging tool around the perimeter of the slab, the edges of the access path, and the top edges of the footing or pedestal. After the concrete has been placed, concrete shall be floated using a magnesium float or other approved float. The surface shall be dense, uniform, and show no voids. Unless otherwise shown on the contract drawings, all exterior concrete surfaces shall receive a light-broom finish. After the surface has been floated, the surface shall be finished with a fiber-bristle brush. Unless otherwise directed by the Contracting Officer, the deformations from brushing shall be 1/16 inch, and the direction of brushing shall be transverse to the direction of traffic.
3.7 CURING AND PROTECTION
All concrete shall be membrane cured for a minimum of 7 days. Membrane curing compound shall conform to ASTM C 309 and shall be applied in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. During the specified cure time, the curing concrete shall not be loaded with external forces, moved or disturbed. All concrete shall be adequately protected from damage. After placement, concrete shall be protected from the damaging effects of rain for 12 hours. All concrete shall be maintained above 40 degrees F. for the duration of the curing period. NO fire or excessive heat shall be permitted near or in direct contact with concrete at any time.

If any departures from the contract drawings are deemed necessary by the Contractor, details of such departures and reasons therefore shall be submitted to the Contracting Officer for approval as soon as practicable but not later than 30 days before installation. No such departure shall be made without the prior written approval of the Contracting Officer.
1.5.2 Code
The installation shall be in accordance with the National Electrical Code ( NFPA 70) and National Electrical Safety Code (IEEE C2) except where more stringent requirements are indicated herein or shown on the contract drawings. Omission of details on the drawings or in the specifications shall not be construed as permitting deviations from Code requirements.
