Unsatisfactory materials include materials classified in ASTM D 2487 as peat, organic clay, or organic silt and any other materials not defined as satisfactory.

2.4 RANDOM FILL

Random fill shall consist of satisfactory materials from excavation or shall be furnished by the Contractor from a commercial source. Random fill shall be free from rocks and large dirt clods. No unsatisfactory materials or debris will be allowed.

2.5 GRAVEL

Gravel shall be a minimum of 1 inch and a maximum of 3 inches in diameter.

Gravel shall be angular and subrounded rock.

2.6 CULVERTS

Pipe for culverts shall be of the sizes indicated. Pipe shall be zinc coated corrugated steel and shall meet the requirements of ASTM A 760/A 760M, Type I, Class A, with annular 2-2/3 by 1/2 inch corrugations. Culverts shall be a minimum of 0.064 inches thick (16 gage).

2.7 DRY PACKAGED CONCRETE

Dry packaged concrete shall conform to ASTM C 387, normal weight, normal strength. Each bag of concrete shall have factory printing indicating the ASTM designation, weight, and strength. Bags shall be stored off the ground and covered to protect from getting wet. Concrete shall be mixed with electric motor or gasoline engine operated portable mixer. Potable water, not river water, shall be used for mixing the concrete.

2.8 NON-SHRINK GROUT

Grout shall be a commercially available prepackaged material. The use of metallic iron in the grout will not be acceptable. Prepackaged nonshrink grout shall be either a gas-liberating or expansive-cement type of material needing only the addition of water and consisting of a commercial formulation suitable for the application proposed and meeting the requirements of ASTM C 1107.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.1 CARD READER

The existing card reader, pedestal and concrete footing shall be raised 6.5 inches to match the new surface elevation. Installation shall be similar to the existing. Prior to placement of new concrete, four #4 X 6-inch bars

Amend 3 shall be drilled and grouted 3 inches into the existing concrete. Before beginning work to raise the card reader pedestal, the contractor shall contact the COR. The COR will make arrangements with Ice Harbor project personnel for disconnection of the card reader electrical wiring. After the card reader pedestal raise is complete, the contractor shall again contact the COR. The COR will make arrangement with Ice Harbor project personnel for reconnection of the card reader electrical wiring. The concrete for raising the card reader pedestal shall be placed in accordance with paragraph CONCRETE PLACEMENT.

3.2 SEWER CLEANOUT

The existing sewer cleanout shall be raised 6.5 inches to match the new surface elevation. Installation shall be similar to the existing. The concrete for raising the sewer cleanout shall be placed in accordance with paragraph CONCRETE PLACEMENT.

3.3 GRAVEL

Gravel shall be placed at culvert outlets as shown on the drawings. Gravel shall be smooth and compacted with 2 passes of a hand compactor or excavator bucket.

3.4 CONCRETE PLACEMENT

Concrete shall be placed within 1-1/2 hours after introduction of the cement to the aggregates. Concrete shall be consolidated by internal, mechanical vibrating equipment. All concrete shall be moist or membrane cured for a minimum of 7 days.

3.5 STOCKPILES

Stockpiles of all material to be incorporated into the work shall be kept in a neat and well drained condition, giving due consideration to drainage at all times. Stockpiles of aggregate and granular soils shall be protected from contamination which may destroy the quality and fitness of the stockpiled material. Materials obtained from different sources shall be stockpiled separately. If any material becomes frozen, saturated, intermixed with other materials, or otherwise out of specification or unsatisfactory for the use intended, such material shall be removed and replaced with new material from approved sources. Stockpiles shall be kept at the staging area as indicated.

3.6 EXCAVATION

Excavation shall be performed in accordance with section 25 of COE EM 385-1-1 and all applicable OSHA regulations.

3.9 PLACEMENT AND COMPACTION

3.9.1 General

Only satisfactory material shall be used as backfill. Fill materials shall be placed and compacted in continuous horizontal layers. The degree of compaction (number of passes with specified equipment) and the maximum thickness of layers before compaction shall be as specified in TABLE 1.

Succeeding layers of fill shall not be placed until the preceding layer has been satisfactorily compacted.

3.9.2 Placement

Random fill shall be placed and compacted to a depth of at least 6 inches before placing the culvert. Material shall be placed evenly on both sides of the culvert and at the lift thicknesses specified below prior to compaction.

3.9.3 Moisture Control

Moisture control will not be required for materials containing less than 10 percent by weight passing the No. 200 sieve. All other materials shall have sufficient moisture so as to form a moist cohesive ball when pressed in the hand. The upper limit of moisture content shall be that which will permit moderate deformation of the material under the impact of the power-hand tampers.

3.9.4 Compaction and Backfill

Compaction of backfill shall be as specified in Table 1. A complete pass shall consist of one complete coverage of the lift area with the contact surface of the compaction equipment.

3.9.5 Compaction Equipment

Compaction equipment shall be in good repair and shall be operated as recommended by the manufacturer. Where a range of frequency vibrations are hereinafter specified, the Contractor shall provide the frequency of vibration best suited for the particular soil being compacted as recommended by the manufacturer. Generally, the lower frequencies are best for granular material.

3.9.5.1 Hand-Operated Vibratory Rollers

Hand-operated vibratory rollers shall be of a type which will produce a dynamic force of at least 140 pounds per lineal inch of drum width. The frequency of vibration during operation shall be between 4000 and 6000 vibrations per minute.

3.9.5.2 Hand-Operated Vibratory Plates

Hand-operated vibratory plates shall be of a type which will produce a dynamic force of at least 5.5 pounds per square inch. The frequency of vibration during operation shall be between 4000 and 6000 vibrations per minute.

3.9.5.3 Hand-Operated Rammers

Hand-operated rammers shall be of a type which will produce an impact force of at least 6.75 pounds per square inch.

3.10 PROTECTION

Settlement or washing that occurs in graded or backfilled areas prior to acceptance of the work shall be repaired and grades reestablished to the required elevations.
