Kanopolis Service Gates Scope of Work
Background: There are two existing service gates, one in each chamber, which have been in service for 68 years. They are constructed of cast steel and have solid skin plates on both the upstream and downstream faces. Cast steel construction is known to have inherent deficiencies or flaws. The skin plates prevent thorough inspection of critical structural members in accordance with Engineering Regulation 1110-2-8157. Limited non-destructive testing has revealed an estimated 12% section loss on the downstream skin plate. A fracture analysis has allowed conditional continued use of the service gates. The project only has one emergency bulkhead which is lowered with a cable using an overhead crane. Due to this operation, it will likely not close in an emergency situation. These factors limit the redundancy available to ensure conduit closure. If the service gates fail, they could either block the conduit, preventing releases, or leave the conduit open to uncontrolled releases. A blocked conduit could prevent flood control releases causing emergency spillway flow to occur more quickly. Uncontrolled releases could lead to loss of the lake pool impacting water supply and recreation. A hydrologic adequacy study was recently completed revealing that Kanopolis can only pass 42% of the Inflow Design Flood prior to overtopping, making flood control releases from the service gates more important.
Scope: The overall scope of the project is to replace the existing two hydraulically operated service sluice gates with two new hydraulically operated services sluice gates that are able to be HSS inspected and meets the needs of operations and maintenance needs of the lake project.
The project includes the construction of the following features:
• Removal of the existing service gates. Existing gates will be removed one at a time and precision measured at the fabrication shop to determine final machining dimensional tolerances for the new gates.
• Fabrication, machining, and painting of approximately two 6.5’x12.5’ services gates of weight of approximately 16,000 pounds each (ASTM A709 material)
• Disassembly and reassembly of the hydraulic operating equipment. Minor maintenance of hydraulic equipment as necessary.
• Painting and blasting the steel conduit liners and gate slots in the tower. Constructing a suitable enclosure for painting of liners and slots within the tower.
• Taking out the rock pad by the tower when the project is done.
