The new hole for the base will be of sufficient width that a commercial vibraplate or vibrafoot compactor or equivalent can be used to properly compact the soils underneath and around the new concrete footing and base when it is back filled.

d. The Contractor will excavate a trench of sufficient size and depth to install the circuit and control wiring from the exterior wall mounted junction box through the new concrete base to the new sign location. The trench will be of sufficient width that a commercial vibrafoot compactor or equivalent can be used to properly compact the soils underneath and above the new circuit and control wiring when it is back filled.

e. Where necessary to prevent physical damage to power and control conduits;

protection around the conduits shall be provided in the form of granular or selected material, or other approved means.

f. All conductors shall be installed in conduit from the exterior junction box to and through the concrete base to the sign. All circuit wiring shall include an appropriately sized grounding conductor. Except where rising to the sign base or junction box, all conduits shall be installed buried a minimum of 36 inches below final finish grade.

g. All wires shall be copper, installed in conduit with type XHHW or RHW-USE) insulation.

h. A direct burial polyethylene or other acceptable warning tape shall be installed directly above all underground conduits/conductors at 12 inches below finish grade the length of the trench up to and adjacent to the junction box and the sign base.

i. The Contractor shall remove and dispose of any conduits, conductors supplying the old base. Removed shall be considered accomplished once the conduits, conductors and bolts have been cut off within one inch of the surface if the old concrete base.

j. Compaction of the trenches and under and around the sign base will be done in one foot or less lifts with a commercial compacter.

All ground connections shall be clamp type grounding connection and securely tightened.

m. All disturbed ground will be returned to their original or better condition except for the excess soil that will be removed from the job site. This is to include the area over the old concrete base as well as areas damaged from the operation of the excavation equipment.

n. The Contractor may cut and preserve the existing grass sod (root base) to reinstall once the trenches and sign base once they have been backfilled and compacted.

o. The Contractor shall vibrate the concrete pours for the new sign base to eliminate voids, taking care not to puncture, deform or float the conduit. The concrete will be installed in one continuous pour. The concrete base will have rounded edges around the top edge of base with the use of a standard concrete edging tool.

p. The new base will be poured with 3000psi or better concrete that will be installed from four feet below the surface of the ground to four inches below surface of the ground. The Contractor will install a full cage of ½” rebar in the concrete base and ¾” J bolt anchors will be tied to the concrete base rebar cage to remount the old sign.

The bolts will be sufficiently threaded to allow for sign adjustment, see drawing. The sign base will be installed on the anchor bolts at the midway point of the threads; so any future adjustments can be accomplished 1” up or down for a total of 2” of adjustment.

q. The Contractor shall remove the concrete forms.

r. The Contractor shall be required to paint the conduit, boxes and fittings that he installs for this project where they are exposed above the ground. The paint color will match the surface color upon which the conduit, box or other equipment are mounted.
