3.2 JACKING SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION
The Contractor shall provide and erect a jacking system in accordance with the approved work plan. Stringers may be jacked individually or with a synchronous system designed to jack all northbound or southbound stringers at each pier simultaneously.
The Contractor shall not modify, damage, or attach the jacking system to any existing bridge member to construct or operate the jacks without approval from the Government. Any modification to the bridge shall be detailed in the erection drawings and approved by a Delaware-registered Professional Engineer.
3.3 INSTALLATION OF BEARINGS
a. The Contractor shall use the existing fastener locations to make connections for the new sole plate to the stringer bottom flanges and for the new bearing pad to the top of the concrete pier. The existing fastener locations shall be field verified. The drawings indicate the required bearing pad and sole plate thickness. Field measurements must be taken to determine the shim plate thickness at each location prior to fabrication.
In the field, the Contractor shall verify sizes, dimensions, and types of materials, as required to satisfactorily complete the work.
b. The Contractor shall remove all anchor bolts and rivets from the existing bearings prior to jacking. Rivets and bolts shall be removed by shearing the head using a pneumatic breaker (helldog), and driving out the shank with a pneumatic hammer. Alternately, bolts may be removed by removing the nut and driving out bolt using manual or pneumatic tools. If rivet or bolt shanks cannot be removed by punching without damaging the base material, remove the shank by drilling. Flame-cutting of rivets, bolts or holes is not allowed. If any structural steel to remain in place or concrete pier is damaged by fastener removal operations, the Contractor shall repair or replace the damaged material as directed by the Contracting Officer at no additional cost to the Government.
c. A Government representative must be present during all lifting and lowering of stringers.
d. The existing stringers shall be lifted and temporarily supported a maximum of 1/8" above existing conditions to allow for replacement of the
Section 05 12 10 Page 5 bearings. The Contractor shall lift both stringers in the same stringer line together.. An approved synchronous jacking system for all northbound or southbound stringers at each pier location shall be used. Hydraulic jacks shall be sized for 200% of the calculated lifting load.
During the jacking and seating procedures, the Contractor shall divert traffic as specified in Section 01 55 00 TRAFFIC CONTROL. Normal traffic patterns shall resume once bearings are properly reseated.
e. The existing bearings shall be removed and the new bearings shall be installed. Existing bearings are heavily corroded and bearing surfaces contaminated with debris. New Bearings and all bearing surfaces shall be thoroughly clean and free of all foreign substances prior to installation.
Existing steel which is to be in contact with new steel shall be cleaned and painted in accordance with Section 00 90 00 PAINTING .
At the time of installation, the bearings shall be set to the dimensions prescribed by the manufacturer and as shown on the contract drawings.
f. Set the bridge bearings, in exact position in the following manner:
Place a grout leveling course approximately 1/4" thick. Temporarily place the vulcanized elastomeric bearing pads in place. Place sole plates and single wedge shim plate in place to determine if further milling of the single wedge shim plate is necessary to achieve a parallel uniform surface, within in a tolerance of 1/8", between the sole plate and the concrete grout. Utilize stainless steel shims as necessary to ensure that the gap between the bearing pad and sole plate is uniform to a tolerance of 1/32”.
Remove the bearing pad and install the sole plate and fabricated shims to the bottom flange of the stringers with countersunk bolts. Install the bearing pad with expansion anchor bolts. The Contractor shall utilize a precision gap measuring device capable of measuring a distance of 2 to 3-inches, with and accuracy of 0.001 inch.
g. Holes in existing steel shall be field drilled. Flame cutting is not permitted. Holes shall be precisely located by use of a template or other approved method. Drilled hole dimensions shall conform to Table 1, AISC S329. Holes in steel shall be free of nicks, burrs, corrosion, scale, paint and foreign substances both inside the hole and on the surfaces around the hole. Holes shall be prepared as necessary with a power tool grinding wheel according to SSPC SP 3 to ensure proper seating of the nut, the bolt head, and the washers. New high-strength bolts shall be installed as indicated on the contract drawings. Bolt length shall be sufficient to project a minimum of 3/8 inch beyond the nut. If the new bolt cannot be placed in the hole originally occupied by the rivet or bolt, ream the hole to proper size. If reaming produces an oblong hole in any material, the largest diameter of which is more than 1/8 inch larger than the diameter of the proposed bolt, increase the diameter of the new bolt by one size and ream the hole to fit the larger bolt. High-strength bolts installed by the Contractor not meeting the requirements detailed on the contract drawings will be removed by the Contractor and replaced at no additional cost to the Government. Existing holes which will not receive new bolts, shall be prepared and painted as specified in Section 09 90 00, PAINTING. Anchor bolts into the concrete pier shall be installed as follows: Bolts shall be installed into the pier as per the contract drawings. An intermediate nut and washer shall be installed on top of the grout. The intermediate nut shall be tightened as described in the contract drawings. Top nuts shall installed as shown on the contract drawings.
