PROGRAM BACKGROUND

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) via the National Resources Consultants (NRC) have requested support from the 569th Engineer Dive Detachment to remove derelict fish nets from the bottom of the Puget Sound IVO the San Juan Islands, WA.

The fishing nets do not degrade in marine waters and continue to entangle marine animals and damage their habitats; removal is the only way to eliminate their negative impacts. The DNR and NRC do not have the ability to dive deeper than 100’; the 569th has the ability to dive to 190’. This mission will specifically target nets located from 105’ to 190’ below surface. The Innovative Readiness Training (IRT) program has been requested and applied for by both the 569th and the DNR for this project. This cooperation program between industry and the military allows both entities to meet their goals and was used in 2008 for early stages of this mission.

This mission is an excellent training opportunity for the 569th due to the real-world technical requirements it demands at deep depths.
