4. Authority:
FAR 8.405-6(a)(1)(i)(B) and 8.405-6(b)(1)Brand Name
5. Reasons for Authority Cited:
1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment (1/75) requests to purchase Blue Buffalo Wilderness Denali Dinner and Blue Buffalo Bits: Tasty Chicken Treats. 1/75 requires these products because they are the only products that have been clinically tested to meet the requirements for Multi-purpose Canines. The current standard dog food available to the U.S. Army meets the caloric requirements for our dog program, AR 190- 12, Military Working Dog Program, dated March 2013; however, it does not meet other nutritional requirements important for the dogs to achieve the level of function needed for the canines to be at on a consistent basis.
According to the Regimental Veterinarian’s general health assessment, the dogs in the 75th Ranger Regiment would benefit from a special diet. The specific recommendation are Blue Buffalo Wilderness Denali Dinner and Blue Buffalo Bits: Tasty Chicken Treats.
The Blue Buffalo products listed above provide a better protein source and well balanced Omega 3 and 6 Fatty Acid Sources that the current diet does not. The current diet leads to chronic gastro intestinal issues that impact mission requirements.
The 75th Ranger Regiment conducted an extensive clinical assessment into the performance of our dogs on various types of food. The assessment concluded that the canines would perform optimally if fed Blue Buffalo Wilderness Denali Dinner and Blue Buffalo Bits: Tasty Chicken Treats.
