BACKGROUND: LSAAP was constructed in 1941 at the beginning of World War II.
The 15,000 acre installation was acquired through outright purchase from private landowners. The facility was a Government-owned, Contractor-operated ammunition loading plant for artillery shells, bombs, fuses, boosters and other auxiliary ammunition items. The 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission designated the LSAAP for closure. The majority of the LSAAP acreage has already been conveyed (transferred), but the Army has retained five land parcels to facilitate environmental remediation. Services include an environmental program; maintaining the monuments needed for monitoring well locations and elevations; general security; building, structure, road and grounds maintenance; and performing semi-annual inspection, maintenance, and repairs to monitoring wells.
