After the pipe has been installed and the trench has been partially backfilled, leaving the joints exposed for examination, the pipe shall be filled with water in a manner to expel all air. The pipe line shall be subjected to a test pressure of 150 percent of the working pressure for a period of at least one-hour. The leakage test shall be performed subsequent to or concurrently with the pressure test and shall meet an allowable leakage rate according to the standard one-hour leakage rate formula:
L=NDP/K, where
L equals the allowable leakage in gallons per hour, N is the number of field joints in the length of pipeline tested, D is the nominal diameter of the pipe in inches, P is the square root of the average test pressure in psig, and K is equal to 7,400.
