PHASE 2 REEF SURVEY REQUIREMENTS
Three bathymetric surveys are required for this project.
1. Preconstruction survey to confirm depths have not changes since USACE survey
January 2022 and City of VB survey June 2023
2. After placement of 6 inches of crushed stone, a survey is requested to ensure the height of the substrate is within the tolerance.
3. As-built survey is requested post construction to ensure the entire reef height does not exceed 12 inches.
This survey has to be submitted to VMRC within 30 days of construction completion.
PHASE 2 REEF CRANEY ISLAND CONSIDERATIONS
All contractors must enter Craney Island through contractors' entrance
A key card for entry will be given upon contract award
PHASE 2 REEF FOSSIL SHELL
Project Need: 5,958 cubic yards of shell
2.2 Fossil Shell
Fossil shell needs to be screened and sorted to be free of debris including trash, vegetation, or other non-shell material prior to placement at the project site. Screening process can occur on Craney Island, or another location identified by the contractor, prior to the shells being transported to the Lynnhaven River. If the contractor uses Craney Island as the sorting location, the contractor is responsible for ensuring any debris from the sorting is removed offsite and follows any additional procedures noted in Policy WRD-01 attached as an appendix to the specifications.
PHASE 2 REEF SPECIAL ENVIRONMENTAL PERMIT CONDITIONS
(18) The permittee and the contractor are required to contact VMRC staff for a pre-construction meeting prior to the commencement of work that shall include an inspection of the staked reef striation corners and the proposed reef materials.
(19) The permittee shall provide a post-construction bathymetric survey of the reef area within thirty (30) days of the completion of work. The survey shall be referenced to mean low water and shall include depth measurements exterior to the limits of the reef limits. Any area with reef material placed at an elevation that exceeds 1-foot above the ambient substrate grade will be considered a violation of the permit.
PHASE 2 REEF SUMMARY
1. Construction timeline must consider no placement of material in Broad Bay between May 31- September 30
2. Three bathymetric surveys are required for this project
3. Reef height cannot exceed 12 inches
