SPECIFICATIONS

QUICK LIME

1. Requirement – It is required that an agreement be established to furnish all of the Washington Aqueduct

2. General – The purpose of this specification is to provide the minimum requirements for Quick Lime including physical, chemical, shipping and testing requirements.

3. Physical Requirements – Quick Lime results from the calcination of limestone, or an equivalent, such as dried sludge from lime softening processes. Quick Lime consists essentially of calcium oxide in natural association with a lesser amount of magnesium oxide.

4. Quality –

(a) The Quick Lime supplied shall contain no soluble material or organic substances in quantities capable of producing deleterious or injurious effects on the health of those consuming water that has been treated properly with the lime products.

(b) Quick Lime shall be certified as suitable for contact with or treatment of drinking water by an accredited certified organization in accordance with ANSI/NSF Standard 60, Drinking Water Chemicals - Health Effects.

(c) Quick Lime shall be crushed and screened so that none is retained on a ¾” sieve. No more than 2% of the Quick Lime shall pass through a No. 100 US standard sieve. No more than 10% of the Quick Lime shall pass a 1/8” sieve.

(d) The Quick Lime delivered in bulk shall be freshly burned, and substantially free from carbonate solids and siliceous residue.

(e) The LOI, loss of ignition test, shall be performed and shall not exceed 1.5% and shall be done as per the current ASTM Test.

(f) The supplied Quick Lime shall be “a high-reactive lime” demonstrating a temperature rise of 40°C

(72°F) in 3 minutes or less and the reaction will be completed within 10 minutes as defined by Section

5.4 AWWA B202-02.

(g) The lime shall be high quality pebble Quick Lime that shall be “quick slaking” which readily disintegrates into a suspension of finely divided material when in the slaker.

(h) The Quick Lime shall have a minimum 90% water-soluble calcium oxide content as per the current ASTM test.

(i) The magnesium content shall not exceed (2%) two percent as per the current ASTM test.

(j) The Quick Lime shall not exceed (5.0%) five percent insoluble material when tested according to

Section 5.5 AWWA B202-02.

5. Affidavit of Compliance –

(a) The Contractor shall submit an affidavit of compliance stating the quality of Quick Lime complies with these specifications and AWWA B202-02 with the bid and for each delivery. This specification shall take precedence over AWWA B202-02 regarding lime quality stringency.

(b) The affidavit of compliance shall contain and meet the quality parameters as specified and detailed in Section 4 above.

(c) The person(s) authorized to certify the affidavit of compliance must have experience with the product.

6. Certified Laboratory Report –

(e) Net dry weight (wt) in tons shall be defined as the delivered net weight as shown on the cargo trailer scale ticket expressed in tons.

(f) Any difference between the actual quantity delivered compared to the estimated quantity shall not entitle the Contractor to an adjustment in the unit price or to any other compensation.

(g) Estimated quantities are based on the cargo trailer scale ticket.

(h) A machine stamped weight certificate shall accompany each delivery.

8. Delivery –

(a) The Contractor shall supply a minimum of 1000 tons of Quick Lime and a maximum of 2100 tons.

(b) The Contractor shall supply the Dalecarlia WTP with a minimum of 800 tons of Quick Lime and a maximum of 1400 tons.
