About this file

This document is a Military Detail Specification Sheet (MIL-DTL-1563) for U.S. Military insignia used on service uniforms and headgear, approved for use across all Department of Defense agencies.

The specification covers two distinct insignia products. MIL-DTL-1563/1B addresses the Full Dress Hat Insignia for Cadet uniforms with Pommel (POM), manufactured from Red Brass 85/15 (UNS Alloy C-230) with a highly polished finish and lacquered front and edge. The insignia is attached via two screw posts and thumb nuts, with piercing as indicated on technical drawings. Unit packaging consists of individual insignia mounted on cards and wrapped, with intermediate packaging of 25 items per box. MIL-DTL-1563/2B specifies the Service Cap Uniform Insignia, also fabricated from Red Brass 85/15 but with a gold-plated finish, matte finish, and burnished highlights. This variant has dimensions of 2-13/32 inches in height, 2-23/32 inches in width, and 0.064 inches ± 0.005 inches in thickness (eagle head). The service cap insignia is packaged individually on 3x3 inch cards with intermediate packaging of 50 items per box. Both specifications reference MIL-DTL-1563 as the governing standard and include technical drawings depicting attachment mechanisms, piercing points, and screw post configurations. The Army (IH Army) serves as the custodian and preparing activity for these specifications, with the Defense Logistics Agency-Connecticut responsible for review.
