About this file

The document is a Salient Characteristics template for a Sources Sought notice for a laser glass processing system required by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory's Advanced Laser Source Development (ALSD) team. The document details specific technical requirements for a single laser glass processing system with four key characteristics: 1) Dual Heat Sources with integrated carbon dioxide (CO₂) laser and resistive fusion filament technology, 2) Advanced CO₂ Laser Configuration featuring a 40-watt annular laser beam with uniform heating capabilities, 3) Filament Fusion Furnace with secondary heat source and soft glass splicing/tapering capabilities, and 4) High-Resolution Imaging and Alignment Features enabling precise fiber alignment and inspection. The document is dated 01/8/2019 and includes a commercial availability certification, indicating these specifications are available in the commercial marketplace. The contracting officer, Daniel Balizan, has signed the document with an expiration date of 4/15/2025.

Technical Point of Contact (TPOC)

The Advanced Laser Source Development (ALSD) team at the United States (U.S.)

Army Research Laboratory (ARL) requires one (1) laser glass processing system with the following minimum salient characteristics:

1. Dual Heat Sources o Integrated carbon dioxide (CO₂) laser and resistive fusion filament technology in a single system.

2. Advanced CO₂ Laser Configuration o Annular (donut-shaped) CO₂ laser beam for uniform heating and minimized hot spots.

o Single CO₂ laser beam design for simplified power control and enhanced uniformity.

o 40 watts (W) CO₂ laser

3. Filament Fusion Furnace o Secondary heat source available within the same system for enhanced process flexibility.

o Various resistive filament materials and sizes available to optimize process conditions.

o Soft glass splicing and tapering capability using an iridium filament fusion source.

o Sub-micron tapering capability with filament fusion technology.

4. High-Resolution Imaging and Alignment Features o True Core high-resolution imaging for precision fiber alignment and inspection.

o Standard end-view imaging for enhanced process control.

o Rotational alignment capability for optimized fiber positioning and splicing accuracy.
