Technical Point of Contact (TPOC)

The Government requires the existing ballistic testing assembly (BTA), colloquially called the “fracture gun”, operated by the Army Research Laboratory (ARL)/Soldeir Protection Sciences Branch (SPSB) to be upgraded. The Contractor shall provide the following minimum requirements and specifications:

Two (2)-liter double diaphragm gas breech assembly with maximum operating pressure of 15 kilo-pounds per square inch (ksi) with the ability to accommodate launch tubes with a variety of inner and outer diameters.

Gas handling panel to fill and fire the gas breech remotely and must be compatible with the existing gas handling infrastructure in the lab.

Control system to remotely pull vacuum in the experimental tanks and fill, fire, and vent the BTA.

15 ksi gas booster system to pressurize the breech.

1.003 inch (”) smoothbore launch tube 15 foot (ft) long.

Gun mount and barrel and breech supports o Gun mount 18 ft long anchored to the concrete floor o Breech support that allows the breech to displace in two (2) directions as well as for precisely aligning the breech to the launch tube.

o Barrel supports that allow for launch tubes with diameters 3” or less o Shock absorber/recoil system

Target chamber to conduct near-muzzle impacts that is compatible with the existing experimental tank assembly o Nominal 23” diameter by 30” length internal volume o At least seven (7) windows/ports positioned primarily for flash x-ray imaging o Design that allows for the new target tank to be unbolted from either the existing target tank or the blast tank for access to both o Evacuation system capable of 100 millitorr (mtorr) in any of the tanks

Onsite installation and demonstration once upgrades are complete.

Delivery is required eight (8) months after award contact award (ACA), and delivery to :

US ARMY RESEARCH LABORATORY 6375 Johnson Rd., Building 321, Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD 21005.
