UT Clarification - Questions & Answers
1. Are we only conducting A straight beam (longitudinal) scan or are we going to be required to perform an axial examination as well? We can produce flat bottom holes for standards complying with ASTM-2154 Class A acceptance criteria. It is required to detect defects in both the axial and circumferential directions. Additionally, it is not required to look for open to the surface defects with UT. Calibration standard must be made of the same material, and same material condition for acoustic parity, and must be performed dynamically in the same way the actual inspection will be performed. Manual scanning is prohibited. (No hand Scanning allowed). If you need further technical clarification on the dynamic calibration, please reach out.
1. ASTM A723/A723M references ASTM A388/A388M throughout the spec. Would it be better to work to that spec and use the acceptance criteria described in ASTM A723/A723M? A388 does allow for inspection to flat bottom hole standards. ASTM A388 will be utilized as the governing procedural standard, while AMS 2154 Class A remains the mandatory acceptance and sizing criteria, as well as the requirements for calibration standards.
1. For MT the inside of the bore is required to be inspected. Is it possible to forgo that inspection if the bore is in the finished condition during UT scanning for bore surface indications? The requirement for Magnetic Particle Inspection of the bore surface remains in effect. Additionally, Magnetic Particle is required for both ID and OD.
