About this file
This amendment to a solicitation for an X-Ray/Computed Tomography System answers questions submitted by a contractor. The Army Materiel Command Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal seeks a system for non-destructive testing and inspection capable of scanning parts up to 500 pounds with options for 20 degree tilt axis and temperature/humidity control enclosure. The closing date for responses was not changed. Concerns were noted regarding stability, repeatability, and weight distribution for the tilt axis function given the primary purpose of computed tomography scanning. However, the 20 degree tilt axis option is to be retained to meet requirements.

QUESTIONS/COMMENT AND ANSWERS
Questions and Comment
1. Question: 4.17 Equipment Enclosure ‐ what is the purpose of the enclosure (e.g., temperature/humidity control, privacy/security, operator comfort)?
Government Response: The purpose of the enclosure is for temperature/humidity control and to maintain a clean environment for the unit. The reason for the personnel door to be equipped with a lockable door with numerical key code access is so that we can limit people around the unit to those with the knowledge and training to use it.
2. Question: When does the system need to be installed at LEAD?
Government Answer: The system does not have a required installation date, however, Letterkenny would have to be provided a project schedule as stated in 3.2 of the Purchase Description.
3. Comment: 4.2.2. Contractor will quote the ± 20° tilt axis, but strongly advises against it if the primary purpose of the system is CT. The reason is because the stability and repeatability of the rotary axis is critical to CT scanning (especially if metrology is needed). As the bearings in the tilt axis wear, this will adversely affect CT scanning in any tilt position. Also, depending on the weight distribution of the part, the tilt axis may not be able to support a 500 lb. part at a 20‐degree angle. It would depend on the total moment arm (i.e., how far away the center of gravity of the part is from the axis of rotation).
Government Response: The concerns over the 20 degree tilt axis are noted but this is an option we want to have on our unit. We understand the concerns with center of gravity and weight of scanned part.
