NOME DEEP DRAFT ARCTIC PORT - PROJECT TEAM
Local Service Facilities (LSF)
General Navigation Features (GNF)
LSF Design Package
GNF Design Package
Contractor Bid Package
Presenter Notes Presentation Notes I’m Bryan Hudson, project manager for the Nome Deep Draft Arctic Port project at PND Engineers. Before we get into the overview of the project I’d like to give you a brief overview of the team that will be working together closely at putting this design together over the next year.
The team consists of the City and Port of Nome who have contracted PND for the dock, roadway, bridge and mooring design. NJUS through PON and the City will work with CRW Engineering Group to provide utilities and lighting for the new port expansion.
USACE will perform design of the causeway armor stone and dredging aspects of the project.
Throughout the next year, all of these team members will work closely to integrate each of our scopes for Phase I of the project into one design package that USACE will put out for construction contractor bidding, if all goes as planned, in 2023.
OVERVIEW OF PORT OF NOME MODIFICATION PROJECT
• First Corps’ construction on Harbor began in
1919.
• Port last upgraded in 2006 to -22 ft MLLW.
• Port Modification authorized for construction in
WRDA 2020.
• Provides support to Nome users and regional communities utilizing Section 2006 of WRDA
2007.
• Allows navigation projects in Alaska to be justified based upon:
• Community Viability
• Public Health and Safety
• Access to Subsistence Resources
• Cultural Significance
• Design Agreement executed 16 June 2021. Deep Water Basin
PROJECT PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
• United States only deep-water port in the Arctic.
• Provides a critical link with 60 communities and the rest of Alaska.
• The existing port facilities in the region are overcrowded and have insufficient draft to accommodate larger and deeper drafting vessel traffic.
• The proposed project objective is to improve support for multiple maritime missions: cargo transportation, search and rescue, emergency and oil spill response, natural resource exploration by:
• Reducing draft limitations to allow use by more efficient vessels.
• Increasing dock space to serve more vessels safely and to avoid delays.
• Increasing navigation area to allow for safe and efficient maneuvering of all vessels.
5PROGRAMMATIC APPROACH
THREE PHASES
PHASE 1 - W. Causeway Extension (Award 2023)
• Stub BW removal
• Causeway extension
• Dock construction
PHASE 2 - Basin Dredging (Award 2025)
• Deep water basin dredging
• Outer basin expansion
PHASE 3 - E. Breakwater Construction (Award 2027)
• East BW demo
• Outer basin expansion
• East causeway construction
