SCOPE

This Configuration Item Design Specification establishes the functional and performance requirements for the Engine system for M109A7 Family of Vehicles (FOV) and the M992A3 Family of Vehicles.

Document Overview This specification provides the technical requirements for a Common Engine for the M109A7 and M992A3 Family of Vehicles (FOV).

The purpose of this document is to facilitate the development of requirements. Within this document, that the M109A7 and M992A3 Integrated Product Team (IPT) will develop the missing requirement in coordination with the subcontractor as applicable and necessary. Final approval of said “to be determined” or "to be reviewed" requirement will rest solely with the M109A7 and M992A3 IPT (including specialty engineering disciplines). The M109A7 and M992A3 IPT may review and revise the requirement in coordination with the subcontractor as applicable and necessary.

Identification This Critical Item Development Specification (CIDS) specifies and establishes the design (functional and performance) requirements for the Common Engine System for M109A7 and M992A3 FOV.

This document contains BAE System Proprietary Information and is considered Export Controlled Data. Document control definitions are defined in the opening cover sheet of this document.

Engine Subsystem Overview The Engine generates torque which is delivered to the transmission which drives the drive shafts, the final drives, sprocket carrier, and track. The Engine system will consist of the engine, engine control module (ECM), starter, Intake Air Heater system, engine sensors, and fuel and oil filtration systems. The engine interfaces with the throttle controls to control vehicle speed.

The ECM controls Engine speed, torque, and fueling. The ECM also monitors and broadcasts different Engine parameters to on-board vehicle computers via CAN Bus in accordance with SAE J1939. It keeps the crew notified of the Engine health, and aids in diagnostics. In addition to monitoring and broadcasting, the ECM also protects the Engine by controlling its output and mode of operation to avoid harm to Engine components.

The oil and fuel filtration systems keep the Engine internal components running smoothly with clean fluids.
