| Ashville rifle. Type III with flat butt plate and brass mounts overall. Lock is model 1841 US rifle manufacture Barrel is 33" long and stamped on the side of the breech faintly "Ala 1864". Underside of the barrel has a cross, a deeply stamped "G" and serial # "105". Written in the barrel channel is the number "83" in pencil. Barrel tang is about 1/4" short for the tang slot. "V" notch sight and iron nose sight. Rifling still remaining in the barrel. One lock plate screw missing. Original ramrod with cupped end and hole in tip. Nose cap of brass, m.1855 type screwed in from inside with brass screw. Few known specimens, among which this is the very best. Rifle has a "Dixon Nelson" barrel, which is undoubtedly one of the 200 sent from Ashville to the Selma Arsenal where the barrel with the Alabama acceptance mark was added. This accounts for the gap in the tang channel. The barrel is completely original to this gun. Most of these were issued to Forrest's cavalry. |
