1.2 Background: This testing is critical to refinement/verification of the Lithium 6T Specification ballistic penetration test requirement and to inform all future Li-Ion 6T development efforts.

1.3 Objectives: The objective of this work is to acquire data and results which will be used to refine the draft Li-ion 6T Specification requirements and in an effort to help improve existing designs and increase performance & safety capabilities of these systems.

1.4 Scope: The Contractor shall perform battery bullet penetration Test A and Test B on one sample each of 5 different Contractor's Li-ion 6T batteries (a total of five Li-ion 6T batteries for Test A and a total of five Li-ion 6T batteries for Test B; for a total of 10 battery bullet penetration tests). The 10 Li-Ion 6T batteries will be provided as GFE by the Government, and the Government reserves the right to substitute different Contractor’s batteries or increase the quantity of one Contractor versus another in the event that two from each Contractor cannot be provided, not to exceed 10 total. The Contractor shall allow physical observation of the battery bullet penetration testing by government personnel (up to 3 people). The Contractor shall collect & log temperature, CAN bus, & voltage data for the batteries during all tests (batteries will be provided fully instrumented by the government and with necessary GFE data acquisition equipment). The Contractor shall be responsible for clean-up of the test site and disposal of all Li-ion batteries after completion of the testing. Batteries shall be videoed at not less than 1080p 30 frames per second, and recorded by a thermal camera while subject to the following bullet penetration tests.

Recordings shall not cease until the following conditions have been met: 1) 12 minutes following the impact; 2) violent activity (e.g. flames, rupturing) has ceased; 3) when the test sample is within 5°C of ambient.

The Contractor shall conduct Test A and Test B per procedure below:

(1) Secure the battery to a mounting apparatus in the same way the battery will be mounted in the end application.

(2) Mark a random location within each general area specified below to be shot.

FPS (+/- 800 FPS).

(4) For each test record the date, time, place, ambient temperature, any events (e.g. smoke, fire, cell activity, and disassembly) along with the event time and associated event severity, and the corresponding HAZARD SEVERITY

LEVEL.

a. Test A: 7.62 mm API Tracer Side Impacts. The battery shall be shot three times at 90° angle on the side of the battery, axis 2 (see FIGURE 11).
