Answer 2: Part I 1.) Is it to be assumed that best commercial packaging practice is to applied to the box?
Answer: Commercial packaging does not apply to this item since there is a SPI P5-4-9847.
2.) Are we to assume that the units are to be bagged and packaged per the SPI and then pack multiple units per box?
Answer: Yes in accordance with Mil-STD-2073 as stated on the SPI.
Part II You are correct there is not a box called out on the SPI. The reason is:
In MIL-STD-2073-1 section 5.3.1 it says (see note c.):
5.3 Level A and B packing requirements.
5.3.1 Intermediate containers. Intermediate containers shall be used under any one of the following conditions:
a. When they are considered economical because of total quantity on order, production schedule or when they facilitate handling, storage and reshipment.
b. When the quantity to be shipped to a single destination permits the use of two or more intermediate containers in an exterior container.
c. When the exterior surface of the unit pack is a bag or wrap of any kind.
d. When specified by the acquisition activity.
The contractor will have to put the part in a bag in accordance with note C of MIL-STD-2073-1 since the part is placed in a bag. So even if we do not specify a box on the SPI the contractor will have to place the item in a box.
