About this file
This document is a military specification for anhydrous strontium nitrate, which is used in pyrotechnic compositions. It outlines the chemical and physical requirements for two grades of strontium nitrate, Grade A and Grade B, including specifications for strontium nitrate content, moisture, hygroscopicity, acidity, water-insoluble matter, grit, chloride, ammonium compounds, sulfur, and trace metal content. The specification also includes granulation requirements, with Grade A requiring 95% through a No. 100 sieve and Grade B requiring 99.9% through a No. 50 sieve and 70% retained on a No. 140 sieve. The document provides detailed test methods for verifying compliance with the requirements. This specification would be applicable to a federal contract opportunity for the procurement of strontium nitrate.

3.2 Granulation
3.2.1 Grade A. The granulation requirement for Grade A strontium nitrate shall be 95 percent through a number (No.) 100 U. S. standard sieve, min., when tested in accordance with 4.4.11. The sie”~eused shall conform to RR-S-366.
3.2.2 Grade B. The granulation requirements for Grade B strontium nitrate shall be 99.9 percent through a No. 50 U. S. standard sieve, min., and 70.0 percent retained on a No. 140 sieve, min. The sieves used shall conform to RR-S-366.
3.3 Workmanship. The material sh.~:1be free from grit, dirt, foreign matter and other injurious materials.
4. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
4.1 Reaponsibility for inspection. Unless otherwise specified in the contract or purchase order$ the supplier is responsible for the performance of all inspection requirements as specified hereim. Ex-cept as otherwise specified in the contract or order, the supplier may use his own or any other facilities suitable for the performance of the inspection requirements specified herein, unless disapproved by the Government. The Governmnt reserves the right to perform any of the inspections set forth in the specification where such inspections are deemed necessary to assure supplies and services conform to prescribed requirements. The test procedures specified hereinafter shall be used in determining compliance of the material with the corresponding require-ments specified in section 3. Failure of a specimen to comply with any requirement of the acceptance test shall result in the rejection of the lot represented.
4.2 Lotting. A lot shall consist of strontium nitrate produced consecutively on one shift, by one manufacturer, at :l:e:ua p~at, using the same equipment, under essentially the same manufacturing conditions, with no change in raw materials, provided the operation is continuous. In the event the process is a batch operation, each batch shall constitute a lot (see 6.3).
4.3 Sampling. Containers shall be randomly selected from each lot in accordance with MIL-STD-105, inspection level S-4, with a minimum sample size of five containers per lot. The contents of each con-tainer shall be thoroughly mixed and approximately 8 ounces of the material removed from each of the selected containers. F~ch primary sample shall be placed in an air-tight container, labeled so that the container from which it was ta!cencan be easily identified. A com-posite sample of approximately 16 ounces shall be made from equal

The composite sample shall be placed in ah air-tight container labeled to show the name of the material, manufacturer> plantg contract or purchase order, batch number, and lot number. All acceptance tests shall be made on specimens selected from the composite sample representative of the lot.
However, if it becomesapparentduringeanplingthat the lot is not -uniform throughout, the inspector may r~ui?e that any of the prisaary samples be tested for compliance with thefreq@nanents 0$ thie spec&-fication. The pri~~ samples shall beheld for futura eq@nation should the composi~a sample fail to meet ~_@p@eficatiw. requirem~ts% ,
4.4 Tests. Distilled water in accordance with &IliD 1193 Type 111, and reagent grade chemicalq shall h U* thro@houg the tests. .BIMk determinations shall be run and corrections shall be applied when necessary.
4.4.1 Strontiumnitrate. Place 10.0 tO.5 gm. of tungstic oxide into a platinum crucible and ignite at 700° t500C (1292° *9@P) in a furnace for 1 hour. Cobl in a desiccator for 60 f5mixiu?e# and-~@. Place the crucible back into the furnace for en additional half hour, cool in a desiccator for 60 *5 minutes, and weigh again. Rapeat the pro-cedure until conetant weight is obtained. ~llow the furnace to cool to approximately room temperature and adjuet the controls to 690°C.
(1274°F). Mix a 2 p. portion of the ~ample (accurtielyweighed to
0.1 reg.)with the ignited tungstic oicideand cover the crucible with a tight fitting cover. Place the cmc~ble in the fU~Ce at ~pp~bitely room temperature and heat to 690°C (1274V). Heat the crucible for 2 hours after the operating temperature has been reached, cool in a desiccator for 60 t5 minutes; and weigh. Reheat for an additional half hour, cool in a desiccator for 60 *S minutes, and weigh again. Repeat the pqocedure until constant weight is obtained. Calculate the percent strontium nitrate as follows:

Allow the diehes to remain in the desiccator for 48 hours and weigh. place the diehes baak into the desiccator for 24 hours and weigh again. Rep=t far 24 hour intervals until constant weight f~ obtained. Usually the weight will not change significantly after the initial 48 hour period. Calculate the percent hygroscopicity as folluwe:

4.4.6 Grit. Weigh 50 gm. of the sample into a 400 ml. beaker, ~Jd about 300 ml. of water, and stir to dissolve. Heat to boiling and boil for 5 minutes with occasional stirring. Filter through a matman No. @ filter paper and transfer and wash with hot water. Ssve the filtrate for the determination of chloride (see 4.4.7). Nash the residue frm the filter paper into a 100 ml beaker with a stream of water from a wash bottle. Add 10 MI. of nitric acid to the 100 ml be&er and evaporate to dryness on a stem bath. Add about 10 ml. of watt~r and break up
