About this file
This document appears to be a pre-solicitation or clarification communication regarding Solicitation W50S99-25-Q-1201, focusing on laser equipment requirements. The sender seeks clarification on two primary aspects: metal processing capabilities and machine design characteristics. Specifically, they want confirmation about whether the laser system needs to cut or merely mark metal, noting their current 150-watt laser can cut foam, wood, and plastics while marking coated and some non-coated metals. They already have a Flow Waterjet for metal cutting and primarily use the laser for foam cutting, anodized metal engraving, and tool etching.
The communication also emphasizes a critical requirement for an "open top" laser machine design that allows insertion of larger material pieces without operational interference. Their current workspace has a 48" wide by 24" deep bed capable of handling 30" or longer sheets, and they strongly prefer an open design to maintain operational versatility. The sender explicitly confirms they are seeking metal marking using Cermark coating rather than through-cutting metals, and they request formal clarification on these technical specifications for the solicitation.

Text version
In the laser requirements document is mentions that you “etch and cut metal”. Do you need to cut metal or just mark it? The 150 watt laser could cut all the foam, wood and plastics. On the metal side it will mark coated metals and also some non-coated metals. If you require cutting metal, then we need to look at a higher power laser wattage. We would need to know what types of metal and thicknesses. We don’t require the laser to cut metal but it would be nice if it did. We have a Flow Waterjet in the shop for cutting metal and other various thick materials. Most of the projects that we accomplish are foam cutting, anodized metal engraving and etching some tools using Cermark. We rarely do glass but when we do etch it, we use a molly spray coating on the glass before use.
With regard to Solicitation W50S99-25-Q-1201 can you please clarify the "open top" requirement? Does it mean that the machine is open/not enclosed, or that the enclosed machine opens from the top? We are seeking an open top design that we will be able to stick larger pieces of material in, and it won’t interfere with the machine while it is running.
The bed that we have now is 48” wide by 24” deep. We can put sheets in our existing laser that are 30” or longer to accomplish cuts and engraving. This is a necessity, not a nicety.
With a closed cabinet, we loose so much versatility
Please confirm that the requirement is metal marking (via coating )and not through-cutting of bare metals. If through metal-cutting is desired, what alloys/thicknesses? We will not be cutting through metals. The top surface of the metal will be etched using Cermark during the laser operation.
