DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH

LEMUEL SHATTUCK HOSPITAL

NOTICE OF OPPORTUNITY W20138

Background The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) is a state-owned facility operated under the supervision of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health pursuant to M.G.L. c. 122.

The Hospital’s mission is to serve the medical and mental health needs of adults that are often underserved in other settings and/or meet the clinical needs of individuals in the care and custody of the Commonwealth.

The maximum capacity of the inpatient units is 260 beds, of which 28 are on a secure correctional unit, 115 are on the Metro Boston Mental Health Units (Department of Mental Health). An array of integrated medical, psychiatric and clinical support services provides the disparate care needs of inpatients that are referred by sources as varied as prisons, public agencies, acute hospitals and community settings. Many patients have difficulty accessing this care in private settings due to complex co-morbidities, discharge challenges, security needs and psycho-social issues that can be complicated and costly to treat.

LSH and the residency program recognize education as a core component of the facility. The hospital educates and trains residents and fellows to be knowledgeable, skillful and professional in medicine.

Scope LSH is releasing this Notice of Opportunity with the intent to engage with potential institutions interested in sponsoring the residency and fellowship programs to provide Graduate Medical Education in specialty areas. The anticipated start date for the Master Affiliation Agreement is academic year 2020-2021.

Residents/Fellows must be enrolled in a fully accredited program by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Coverage of the LSH assignment must be assured for twelve months of the year, except where noted otherwise.

The goals and objectives of Graduate Medical Education are to prepare physicians for independent medical practice and American Board of Medical Specialty certification in accordance with ACGME Institutional, Common Program and specialty-specific Program Requirements.

LSH is responsible for selecting qualified teaching staff to participate in the graduate medical education program(s) and for providing required information concerning such staff to the sponsoring institution.
