SECTION C - DESCRIPTION/SPECIFICATIONS/WORK STATEMENT

STATEMENT OF WORK (SOW) FOR THE PRODUCTION OF M231/M232-series COMBUSTIBLE CASE ASSEMBLIES FOR THE 155MM M231/M232Type PROPELLING

CHARGES

C.1 SCOPE _____

C.1.1 OBJECTIVE

The contractor shall provide for all necessary labor, materials and facilities to test, produce, and deliver component parts and subassemblies to fabricate Modular Artillery Charge System (MACS) M231/M232-series Combustible Case Assemblies for 155mm Propelling

Charges. The contractor shall fabricate the M231 and M232-series Combustible Case Assemblies in accordance with assembly drawing number 12972359 and 12961005, DTL14000032 and drawing number 12972374 and 12961005, DTL12991222, respectively.

The Government may require specific efforts applicable to production design or materiel changes, obsolescence mitigation concepts, malfunction investigations, and product teardowns for the Modular Artillery Charge System Program to address safety, cost, and performance issues during the contract period of performance. These efforts will be initiated through (SOWs) or Engineering Change

Proposals (ECPs) and reviewed by the contractor prior to incorporation into the contract via contract modification.

C.1.2 BACKGROUND

The M231 was Full Material, released on 22 April 2003, and the M232A2 was Full Material, released on 20 November 2006. The effort is the production of the MACS M231/M232-series Combustible Case Assemblies. MACS is two different propelling charges which provide a complete zoning solution for 155mm artillery applications by using multiples of a basic module. MACS consists of the M231 propelling charge and the M232Type (i.e. "series") propelling charge. The M231 module is used at lower zones (1 or 2 increments at a time) while the M232Type module is used at higher zones (3, 4, 5 or 6 modules at a time). Both the M231 and M232Type are based on the classical

XM230 Unicharge design; i.e., bi-directional center core ignition, granular propellant contained in a rigid combustible case, etc.;

however, the M231 and M232Type have design differences. All M231 modules are identical allowing them to be interchangeable (likewise with M232Type). The design features allow MACS modules to be both manually and automatically handled, which allows MACS to be used with currently fielded Howitzers and future artillery needs.
