About this file
This document contains questions and answers regarding a federal solicitation for the VESUB Trainer Hardware Contract Opportunity. The solicitation seeks a virtual reality headset known as the nVIS nVisor ST50 Head-Mounted Display for use in training naval officers and enlisted personnel on proper ship navigation and piloting techniques using the VESUB Trainer simulation system. While another company proposed alternative augmented and virtual reality headsets, the responses indicate the solicitation requirements call specifically for the nVIS ST50 virtual reality headset due to its audio capabilities and integrated push-button control compatible with the VESUB simulation software. The solicitation is issued by the Department of the Navy Naval Air Systems Command for multiple contract delivery locations.

VESUB Hardware As of July 24, 2020 Question #1 Specifies name brand items such as the NVIS nVisor ST50 Head-Mounted Display (HMD). SA Photonics has a SA-62/S HMD with better performance than the ST50. The SA-62/S has a wider field of view (62 vs 50 degrees) with better spatial resolution (1920 x 1200 OLED vs a 1280 x 1024 OLED) compared to the ST50. Attached is a datasheet for the SA-62/S HMD.
Is there a possibility that the SA-62/S HMD could be included into the solicitation?
Answer: This is an augmented reality headset (you still see your surroundings with the computer image overlaid in your line of site). The nVIS product is a virtual reality headset (you only see the computer image, not your surroundings).
Question #2 Photonics has a SA-62 HMD (a virtual reality headset) with better performance than the NVIS ST50 HMD. The SA-62 has a wider field of view (62 vs 50 degrees) with better spatial resolution (1920 x 1200 OLED vs a 1280 x 1024 OLED) compared to the ST50. Attached is a datasheet for the SA-62 HMD.
Is there a possibility that the SA-62 HMD could be included into the solicitation?
Answer: No, it is not an acceptable substitute. The SA-62 is an “augmented reality” headset (you see the computer image overlaid in front of your surroundings) where the nVIS headset is a “virtual reality” headset (you only see the image provided by the computer and not your surroundings). The specs are nice but it is not the same thing.
Question #3 The SA-62 and the SA-62/S are two different HMDs. The SA-62 is a “virtual reality” headset (you only see the image provided by the computer and not your surroundings). The SA-62/S is a “augmented reality” headset (you see the computer image overlaid in front of your surroundings).
Answer: The SA-62, it does not include audio (like the nVIS product) or the USB push button (like the nVIS does) that VESUB uses to simulate a “virtual binocular” within the simulation.
