About this file

This is a Vehicle Lettering Guide prepared by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services that establishes standardized specifications for the design and application of lettering, markings, and logos on department vehicles. The guide applies to all Fire Services vehicles including small vehicles such as SUVs and pickup trucks, as well as larger vehicles and trailers used by various divisions including Hazmat, Fire Academy, Fire Marshal, and Administration. The document provides comprehensive visual and technical specifications for maintaining consistent branding across the fleet.

The guide specifies that Bookman Old Style bold font in upper and lowercase letters serves as the standard lettering font, with white lettering on red vehicles and red or black lettering on white vehicles. All text must include "Department of Fire Services" and division names in Title Case. Reflective safety markings must be applied with white stripes on red vehicles and red stripes on white vehicles, measuring six inches solid with one-inch skinny stripes above and below, scalable proportionally to vehicle size. Large vehicles require chevron markings on the rear covering a minimum of fifty percent of the rear surface in reflective red and yellow six-inch wide stripes, with DOT reflective stripes on bottom edges and corners. Specific paint specifications are mandated, including Dupont L6572 red and Chrysler DT 1084 white. The guide permits optional removable panels or stickers for vehicle program or use designations such as "Rope Rescue" to allow flexibility if trailer use changes without requiring repainting. Gold badges must be placed on vehicle doors on the reflective stripe, and round patch logos should appear on both vehicle sides with matching red colors.

Text version

Font

• Bookman Old Style bold is the vehicle lettering font. Use upper and lowercase letters, not all capitals. If this font is not available, work with graphic artist on substitutions.

Lettering and Text

• Text includes Department of Fire Services and Division Name in Title Case, not in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS.

• Lettering is white on red vehicles and red or black on white vehicles. Gold lettering may be used on larger white vehicles. Lettering is reflective in most cases. Gold lettering has a black outline instead of a drop shadow.

• Use a minimal drop shadow on letters (black for white letters, white for black letters).

Reflective Safety Markings on Large Vehicles and Trailers

• Stripes are white on red vehicles and red on white vehicles. Stripe is solid (6 inch) with skinny (1 inch) stripes above and below. Stripes can be sized up proportionately to work with vehicle size. Lettering may or may not be on the stripe. Should follow best design for whole vehicle. Stripes cover both sides of the vehicle. Stripe may extend across front of vehicle if appropriate.

• Chevron on back of vehicles covers a minimum of 50% of the rear of large vehicles . Chevron is reflective red and yellow (6 inch wide stripes). Text saying Department of Fire Services may go above the chevron, where appropriate.

• DOT reflective stripes are used on the bottom edge of front and sides of all larger vehicles. The rear of all vehicles will include DOT reflectors and corner stripes, as well as the large chevron.

• Front of large vehicles must have something reflective (stripe or text), covering 25% of the width of the front.

Front of Trailer Markings

• Vehicle height reversed on top driver’s side (top right corner).

• Fleet number on lower passenger side (in lower left corner).

• Vehicle’s program or use may also be included on top passenger side (top left corner) and on both sides of trailer.

Round Patch Logo and Gold Badge

• Correct versions of patch and badge are on the right. High resolution images for badge and patch are available from the graphic artist.

• Use the Gold Badge on the doors of vehicles, on the reflective stripe.

• Use the Round patch together with lettering on both sides of vehicles. The red in the round patch should match the red used on the vehicle.

Smaller vehicles:

(SUVs and Pick-up trucks) Stripes are reflective, white on red vehicles and red on white vehicles. Stripe is solid, 6 inches high. Lettering should be as large as possible while remaining inside the stripe (5 inches high). The lettering can stretch across the back and front doors.

Gold Badge is on the door of code enforcment vehicles, on the stripe.

Smaller Vehicles - SUVs and Pick-up Trucks

Larger Vehicles

Use a minimal drop shadow on letters (black for white letters, white for black letters).

Optional Trailer Markings: Vehicle Program or Use

• Vehicle program or use is printed on a removable panel or a sticker, so that if the trailer use changes, the panel or sticker can be changed without re-painting the vehicle or leaving unsightly marks. Panel/sticker is white on red backgrounds with red text, and red on white backgrounds with white text.

• Vehicle program or use (i.e. Rope Rescue) is optional, but when used it should be on front and both sides of the vehicle.

• Vehicle program or use (ie: rope rescue) is on lower back corners of trailer below the reflective stripe on both sides, and on the front of the trailer, upper passenger side (upper left corner).

Examples

DOT reflective stripes are used on the bottom edge of front and sides of all larger vehicles. The rear of all vehicles will include DOT reflectors and corner stripes, as well as the large chevron.

Rear of vehicle. Lettering says Department of Fire Services. Placement varies depending on the vehicle design. Reflective stripe from sides can continue on back if it fits. Chevron if required.

Department of Fire Services Department of Fire Services, Lettering is white on red vehicles and red or black on white vehicles. Gold letter-ing may be used on larger white vehicles. Lettering is reflective in most cases.

Gold lettering has a black outline instead of a drop shadow.

Text includes Department of Fire Services and Division Name in Title Case, not in all CAPITAL letters.

Large vehicles may have exterior features lettering should not be on. Pictured is a new (2014) Haz Mat vehicle that shows one potential solution to the problem. Flexibility is needed in these cases.

• Black lettering might be easier to read on a vehicle like this one where the lettering cannot stretch across a larger portion of the vehicle.
