About this file
This document is a Modification of Specification for work on the Number One and Number Two Main Propulsion Diesel Engines (MPDE) aboard the USS GABRIELLE GIFFORDS (LCS 10). The work is located in Engine Room Number 2 and involves repair services for two MTU 20V8000M91 diesel engines, each rated at 9,100 KW, 1,150 RPM, with 20 cylinders.
The contractor must provide authorized original equipment manufacturer (OEM) service through an authorized MTU service provider for removal, inspection, repair, installation, testing, and provision of special tools and drawings. Key work requirements include: removal and replacement of specified materials per the parts list; removal and disposal of system fluids; cleaning and flushing to Level II standards using Delvac 1640 engine oil; torque verification per specification section 8; replenishment of lube oil (Delvac 1640) and jacket water (Inhibitor Corrosion Liquid Cooling Formula A216 with distilled deionized water); performance of diesel engine cold and hot checks; and engine run-in per MTU procedures with laptop data logging, to be completed no later than dock trials with zero allowable leakage or malfunction. The contractor must submit technical representative qualifications for approval 15 days prior to work commencement and provide software, laptops, and special tooling. Government-furnished materials include 40 cylinder units, 80 studs, two engine coolant pumps, and one air starter. The specification references multiple technical documents including General Specifications for Overhaul of Surface Ships (Rev 12), MTU 20V8000M91 functional descriptions, NSTM 233, maintenance requirement cards, and MTU running-in procedures. The known source for technical representation is MTU America Inc. in Novi, Michigan, with point of contact Christopher Currie.
