About this file
This document is a Statement of Salient Characteristics and Technical Specifications for a floor-model preparative laboratory ultracentrifuge system required by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Forest Service (USFS), CSA East 6. The system is intended to support active research in plant virology and molecular biology by performing high-speed sedimentation, separation, and purification of macromolecular biological samples, including viral particles, proteins, exosomes, cellular organelles, and nanoparticles.
The ultracentrifuge must meet specific core performance requirements: a minimum rotational speed of 90,000 RPM with precision acceleration capability, a maximum centrifugal force of 694,000 x g (RCF), speed control precision within +/- 2 RPM at speeds above 1,000 RPM, operational temperature range from 0°C to 40°C in 1°C increments, and temperature control accuracy within +/- 0.5°C. The system must utilize a vacuum-encased induction drive system. Critical salient characteristics include 100% native mechanical compatibility with legacy Beckman SW 28 swing-bucket and Type 90 Ti fixed-angle rotors without requiring proprietary adapters, comprehensive multi-stage overspeed prevention incorporating three independent safety check structures, refrigerant gas-free cooling using solid-state thermoelectric technology with zero CFCs, automated input voltage handling from 180 to 264 VAC with momentum-coast capabilities, data management features supporting 50 unique operator IDs with multi-level access hierarchy and electronic signature tracking, and physical dimensions not exceeding 940 mm (Width) by 681 mm (Depth) with a minimum net weight of 485 kg and high-tensile seamless steel containment. Lifecycle support must include on-site delivery and installation, operator training, field calibration and IQ/OQ verification services, and minimum warranty coverage of 1 year on the primary frame, 5 years on rotor bodies, and 10 years on the main vacuum-encased drive unit core.

SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS & TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Floor-Model Preparative Laboratory Ultracentrifuge System
1. Scope of Requirement
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Forest Service (USFS), CSA East 6, requires the procurement of a high-performance, floor-model preparative laboratory ultracentrifuge system. This scientific instrumentation is utilized for the high-speed sedimentation, separation, and purification of macromolecular biological samples, including viral particles, proteins, exosomes, cellular organelles, and nanoparticles. The system must support active research in plant virology and molecular biology by delivering exact particle sedimentation thresholds under continuous high-vacuum and strict thermal parameters.
2. Core Performance Specifications
Technical Parameter Minimum Mandatory Requirement
Maximum Rotational Speed Minimum of 90,000 Rotations Per Minute
(RPM) capable of precision acceleration.
Maximum Centrifugal Force Minimum of 694,000 x g (Relative
Centrifugal Force / RCF) at full operational capacity.
Speed Control Precision Must maintain a rotation precision threshold within +/- 2 RPM at speeds above 1,000
RPM.
Operational Temperature Range Selectable from 0°C to 40°C in exact 1°C increments to safeguard sample integrity.
Temperature Control Accuracy Must maintain steady-state temperature within +/- 0.5°C across the entire operating range.
Drive Implementation Type Vacuum-encased induction drive system functioning inside a single shared vacuum environment.
3. Mandatory Salient Characteristics
To be considered technically acceptable, any alternative instrumentation must natively possess all of the following salient physical, safety, and interface features without requiring post-manufacturing adaptations:
• Total Legacy Asset Component Interoperability (Rotor Compatibility): The centrifuge drive spindle, hub geometry, and vacuum chamber dimensions must maintain 100% native, un-adapted mechanical compatibility with the government's existing inventory of heavy titanium preparative rotors, specifically including legacy Beckman SW 28 swing-bucket and
Type 90 Ti fixed-angle rotor platforms. Alternative units requiring proprietary vendor conversion adapters are technically unacceptable.
• Comprehensive Multi-Stage Overspeed Prevention: The hardware configuration must incorporate three independent, simultaneous layers of safety check structures: (1) Dynamic
Rotor Inertia Verification calculating kinetic energy profiles during initial spool-up, (2) an optical physical sensor array reading an overspeed ring disk at the base of the drive spindle, and (3) an independent magnetic sensor cross-checking real-time spindle rotations.
• Environmental & Infrastructure Restraints: Cooling and refrigeration systems must operate entirely refrigerant gas-free, utilizing a solid-state thermoelectric cooling and heating block that contains 100% zero Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or synthetic chemical gaseous mediums to comply with native facility environmental parameters.
• Power Quality Handling: The system must feature a built-in automated input voltage handling matrix supporting 180 to 264 VAC line switching, alongside an un-braked momentum-coast system allowing continued operation or safe recovery during transient low-voltage anomalies (< 85 VAC) or complete electrical drop-outs.
• Data Management & Security Protocols: Features an embedded graphical workspace including local user log tracking supporting up to 50 unique operator IDs, multi-level data access hierarchy restrictions (Administrator, Super User, and Operator), electronic signature chain-of-custody recording, and real-time operational temperature/speed plotting exportable natively to local USB flash storage or a networked drive via Ethernet in generic XML and
CSV spreadsheets.
• Physical Dimensions & Structural Safety: Footprint dimensions must not exceed a localized footprint configuration of 940 mm (Width) by 681 mm (Depth) to fit existing laboratory floor plan layouts. The structural casing must possess a minimum net weight of
485 kg (1,069 lbs) paired with a high-tensile seamless steel containment sleeve layout to satisfy localized maximum credible accident (MCA) safety containment regulations.
4. Lifecycle and Field Service Requirements
To ensure continuous mission performance and strict engineering verification, the following lifecycle support items must accompany any technical submission:
• On-Site Delivery and Basic Installation Service: Logistics must include secure freight delivery, inside uncrating, layout leveling, utility connections, and operational verification.
• Basic Operator Verification Training: Provision of introductory on-site training sessions covering general hardware interaction, menu sequencing, rotor attachment, and safety log extraction methodologies.
• Field Calibration & Verification Lifecycle Support: The responding vendor must have local, manufacturer-trained field service technicians available to complete on-site validation
(Installation Qualification/Operational Qualification - IQ/OQ) and routine technical monitoring programs.
• Minimum Technical Warranty Coverage: Standard baseline warranty coverage must guarantee a minimum of 1 year on the primary system frame, 5 years on any accompanying rotor bodies, and 10 years on the main vacuum-encased drive unit core.
