About this file
This is a Timber Sale Prescription document issued by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR), Forest Resources Division, for a timber marking and sale preparation project in the Gwinn Management Unit. The project involves marking and prescribing treatment for timber harvesting across five stands (6, 9, 19, 36, and 43) totaling approximately 292.8 acres in Sections 3 and 9 of Township 49N, Range 26W. The timber sale, identified as Sale Number 32-010-26 (Comp 203), requires contractors to perform selective cutting using group selection or single-tree selection methods to maintain Northern Hardwoods management objectives, with specific basal area targets ranging from 65 to 80 square feet per acre depending on the stand. The contractor must complete a mandatory pre-work meeting before October 1, 2025, and finish all contract work by August 1, 2026. Work can commence immediately upon contract award. Key deliverables include GPS data collection using the Field Maps application for all boundary lines, regeneration gaps, and marked trees; a list of personnel who performed marking or cruising work; and a summary of paint materials used.
The prescription specifies detailed marking requirements including paint colors for different boundary types (blue with pink flagging for private boundaries, red for state boundaries, yellow for interior payment unit lines, orange for trees marked to cut, and green for trees to leave), minimum diameter specifications for different product types (10.6 inches for sawlogs, 4.6 inches for pulpwood), and special instructions for creating regeneration gaps of 0.25 to 0.75 acres in stands 6, 9, 36, and 43. The MDNR will supply paint from the Gwinn Office and coordinate scheduling with contractor operations. Contractors are responsible for obtaining landowner permission to cross private land and must protect corner monuments and bearing trees discovered during marking operations. The document does not specify pricing terms, but contractors must demonstrate they can manage multiple markers within assigned geographic areas and maintain identifiable records of work performed by each individual involved in marking and cruising operations.

PRESCRIPTION
Stand 6: Cut using a group selection system. Mark stand to 70 SQ FT using complete marker as a guide. Retain all hemlock and yellow birch unless harvest is necessary for operations. Create gaps of 0.25 - 0.75 acres in areas of advanced regeneration, intolerant species, or areas that look like they will support regeneration. Leave tops in gaps (When marking gaps mark trees with large bushy tops or forks with x's rather than a slash to denote that any material under 8 inches must be left within the gap). Consider planting of oak and white pine if regeneration of gaps fails. Gaps should cover around 10-20 percent of the treatment.
Stand 9: Cut using a group selection system. Mark stand to 70 SQ FT using complete marker as a guide. Retain all hemlock and oak unless harvest is necessary for operations.
Stand 19: Cut using a selection system. Mark stand to 65 SQ FT using complete marker as a guide. Retain all hemlock, white ash, and yellow birch, unless harvest is necessary for operations. Due to heavy deer yard use across portions of the stand, do not create regeneration gaps. Target reserving 2-5 suitable seed trees per acre; these trees should be released to improve crown and overall tree health and be marked so they are protected for long term seed production.

When marking gaps, mark trees with large bushy tops or forks with x's rather than a slash to denote that any material under 8 inches must be left within the gap. Consider planting of oak and white pine if regeneration of gaps fails.
Stand 43: Cut using a selection system. Mark stand to 70 SQ FT using complete marker as a guide. Retain all hemlock, oak, white ash, and yellow birch, unless harvest is necessary for operations. Create gaps of 0.25 - 0.75 acres in areas of advanced regeneration, intolerant species, or areas that look like they will support regeneration. Leave tops in gaps.

Management Objective: Northern Hardwoods (Mark to Cut)
• Gaps will be installed in accordance with ‘Interim Guidance – Increased Minimum Gap Size and Regeneration
Accountability for Uneven-aged Management’.
When marking, prioritize selection of trees to be cut in the following order:
1. Remove high-risk and cull trees.
2. Remove trees of poor form.
3. Mark to encourage an all age stand structure (improve diameter distribution).
4. Leave nest trees and legacy trees (trees >26” in diameter at breast height).
5. Leave exceptional den trees (cavity trees).
6. Encourage species diversity.
7. When marking canopy gaps, mark all undesirable trees for cutting within gap down to 2” DBH.
8. Follow all guidelines set forth in “The Complete Marker”.
9. Further guidance will be discussed at prework meeting.

9. A summary of paint used (in quarts).
10. All GPS data must be recorded and synced with the Field Maps application.
Additional Information:
• Contractors are responsible for obtaining landowner permission before crossing private land. Private landowner contact information can be obtained by request from the Contract Administrator.
• Pre-work Meeting: The contractor must schedule and attend a pre-work meeting with the Gwinn DNR staff. All roads must be GPS’d.
When registered corners or witness trees are discovered:
• Any wooden bearing posts encountered at corners must also be painted/protected.
• Bearing and/or witness trees discovered during the course of sale preparation must be protected. This can be accomplished by painting a ring completely around the tree at 4-6 feet above ground level with either red paint (corner surrounded by state lands) or blue paint (corner surrounded by private lands). In addition, tying ribbon on these trees helps alert loggers to their presence. Do not mark any trees for harvest if cutting them is likely to result in damage to corner monuments and/or bearing trees. See map locations for known corners.
• Please report the condition of all corners, posts, and bearing trees to the local contact.
