About this file
This is a Timber Sale Prescription document from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources - Forest Resources Division for the Comp 203 Contract Marking timber sale located in Marquette County. The sale involves harvesting timber from 292.8 acres across Sections 3 and 9 in Township 49N, Range 26W, with contract work scheduled to begin immediately and be completed by August 1, 2026. The timber sale covers five different stands (Stands 6, 9, 19, 36, and 43) using group selection and single tree selection methods, with a management objective of Northern Hardwoods. The treatment involves marking trees to be cut or retained, creating regeneration gaps of 0.25 to 0.75 acres, and maintaining specific basal area requirements.
The timber sale will be conducted using specific marking specifications, including diagonal slashes on sawlogs (minimum 10.6" DBH) and pulpwood (minimum 4.6" DBH). Trees marked to be cut will be painted orange, while trees to be retained will be marked green. The prescription includes detailed instructions for marking, such as prioritizing the removal of high-risk and cull trees, maintaining an all-age stand structure, and protecting nest trees and legacy trees. Contractors are responsible for obtaining landowner permissions, attending a pre-work meeting, and following specific GPS and paint marking guidelines. The local contact for this timber sale is Jacob Siler, who can be reached at SilerJ3@michigan.gov or (906) 221-5885.

PRESCRIPTION
Stand 6: Cut using a group selection system. Mark stand to 70 SQ FT using complete marker as a guide. Retain all hemlock and yellow birch unless harvest is necessary for operations. Create gaps of 0.25 - 0.75 acres in areas of advanced regeneration, intolerant species, or areas that look like they will support regeneration. Leave tops in gaps (When marking gaps mark trees with large bushy tops or forks with x's rather than a slash to denote that any material under 8 inches must be left within the gap). Consider planting of oak and white pine if regeneration of gaps fails. Gaps should cover around 10-20 percent of the treatment.
Stand 9: Cut using a group selection system. Mark stand to 70 SQ FT using complete marker as a guide. Retain all hemlock and oak unless harvest is necessary for operations.
Stand 19: Cut using a selection system. Mark stand to 65 SQ FT using complete marker as a guide. Retain all hemlock, white ash, and yellow birch, unless harvest is necessary for operations. Due to heavy deer yard use across portions of the stand, do not create regeneration gaps. Target reserving 2-5 suitable seed trees per acre; these trees should be released to improve crown and overall tree health and be marked so they are protected for long term seed production.

PRESCRIPTION
Stand 36: Cut using a group selection system. Mark stand to 80 SQ FT using complete marker as a guide. Retain all hemlock, white pine, and yellow birch unless harvest is necessary for operations. Create gaps of 0.25 - 0.75 acres in areas of advanced regeneration, intolerant species, or areas that look like they will support regeneration. Leave tops in gaps. When marking gaps, mark trees with large bushy tops or forks with x's rather than a slash to denote that any material under 8 inches must be left within the gap. Consider planting of oak and white pine if regeneration of gaps fails.
Stand 43: Cut using a selection system. Mark stand to 70 SQ FT using complete marker as a guide. Retain all hemlock, oak, white ash, and yellow birch, unless harvest is necessary for operations. Create gaps of 0.25 - 0.75 acres in areas of advanced regeneration, intolerant species, or areas that look like they will support regeneration. Leave tops in gaps.

Management Objective: Northern Hardwoods (Mark to Cut)
• Gaps will be installed in accordance with ‘Interim Guidance – Increased Minimum Gap Size and Regeneration
Accountability for Uneven-aged Management’.
When marking, prioritize selection of trees to be cut in the following order:
1. Remove high-risk and cull trees.
2. Remove trees of poor form.
3. Mark to encourage an all age stand structure (improve diameter distribution).
4. Leave nest trees and legacy trees (trees >26” in diameter at breast height).
5. Leave exceptional den trees (cavity trees).
6. Encourage species diversity.
7. When marking canopy gaps, mark all undesirable trees for cutting within gap down to 2” DBH.
8. Follow all guidelines set forth in “The Complete Marker”.
9. Further guidance will be discussed at prework meeting.

Special Marking Instructions:
• Put upper marks on two opposite sides of trees 6’ above the ground, all marked trees must have stump marks.
• In Stands 6, 9, 36 and 43: Only establish regeneration gaps in areas with advanced regeneration. Target area of
10-20% of treatment in gaps may not be reached if advanced regeneration is not present.
o Gaps will be installed in accordance with ‘Interim Guidance – Increased Minimum Gap Size and
Regeneration Accountability for Uneven-aged Management’.
o Aim for lower side of target area for regeneration gaps, i.e., 10% o All regeneration gaps need a reference point collected in MobileMap and returned to DNR.
o Regeneration gaps are delineated by marking all trees to cut in orange.
o When marking gaps, mark trees with large bushy tops or forks with x's rather than a slash to denote that any material under 8 inches must be left within the gap.
o Avoid marking regeneration gaps immediately adjacent to each other or red line, i.e., merchantable trees should be present between gaps and between gaps and red line.
o No regeneration gaps are needed in Stand 19.
• If stick nests are discovered within the stand while marking, contact the Contract Administrator.
• Avoid marking in wet weather conditions, or when tree boles are damp.

• The contractor must furnish the DNR with plot data showing residual BA/Ac for payment units to be checked (Self
Administration). This is due before the DNR checks the marking.
• Final marking details are to be discussed at the pre-sale meeting.

Additional Information:
• Contractors are responsible for obtaining landowner permission before crossing private land. Private landowner contact information can be obtained by request from the Contract Administrator.
• Pre-work Meeting: The contractor must schedule and attend a pre-work meeting with the Gwinn DNR staff. All roads must be GPS’d.
When registered corners or witness trees are discovered:
• Any wooden bearing posts encountered at corners must also be painted/protected.
• Bearing and/or witness trees discovered during the course of sale preparation must be protected. This can be accomplished by painting a ring completely around the tree at 4-6 feet above ground level with either red paint (corner surrounded by state lands) or blue paint (corner surrounded by private lands). In addition, tying ribbon on these trees helps alert loggers to their presence. Do not mark any trees for harvest if cutting them is likely to result in damage to corner monuments and/or bearing trees. See map locations for known corners.
• Please report the condition of all corners, posts, and bearing trees to the local contact.
