Office: Northwest Oregon District, Tillamook Field Office Notice of Funding Opportunity Number: L23AS00444 Project Submission Dates and Times: April 14, 2023 5PM EST
Project Title: Tillamook Field Office Natural Resource Intern Youth Opportunity Maximum Available Funding in FY23: $15,000 Project Background Information:
The Tillamook Field Office manages approximately 104,000 acres within the Northwest Oregon District for timber harvest, recreation, threatened and endangered species, habitat restoration, and more to support BLM’s mission to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations while also ensuring we maintain natural, cultural, and historic resources. We manage our public lands to maximize opportunities for commercial, recreational, and conservation activities, which promotes healthy and productive public lands that create jobs in local communities. We employ foresters, forestry technicians, forest engineers, soils specialists, wildlife biologists, fish biologists, hydrologists, botanists, GIS specialists, natural resource specialists and roads and realty specialists to manage BLM lands in the Tillamook Field Office.
The Tillamook Field Office is seeking proposals to develop and support an internship to provide hands on natural resource experience, education, and employment opportunities to local youth in order to promote and build public knowledge and support for management activities in the BLM and increase awareness of natural resource career opportunities.
Project Objective: The objectives for this internship program are to increase public knowledge of and access to local public lands, increase awareness of BLM’s presence and management objectives within the Tillamook Field Office, and increase awareness of natural resource and land management career opportunities for local youth.
Work Schedule: Generally, Monday – Friday, 8 AM to 5PM or Monday – Thursday, 10 hours per day. Flexible start and end dates for the internship will best meet program needs and youth schedules.
Qualification Requirements: This opportunity is suitable for youth working towards an undergraduate or graduate degree in a natural resource related discipline. The internship will include a large amount of field work, often in steep and brushy terrain.
Housing: The BLM cannot provide housing but may be able to assist in locating housing.
Vehicle Needs: The successful proponent will consider vehicle needs to and from the Tillamook Field Office at the start and end of each workday as part of the intern selection process.
Other Project Considerations: The successful proponent will consider food, appropriate field going clothing and footwear, and training requirements for the intern.
Duties: The intern will be involved with staff conducting a variety of natural resource field work including timber sale layout, data collection, GIS work, survey contract inspection, resource monitoring, etc.
BLM’s Involvement: There will be substantive involvement by the BLM program officer to develop a program of work that will engage the capacity of the successful project proponent to address natural resource experience opportunities at the Tillamook Field Office. BLM will assign a staff mentor for the intern to provide direction, scheduling, necessary orientation, and hands-on field training. BLM will have the right to intervene by modifying the project management plan, if the project is not staying on schedule, or is not to BLM standards. In addition, BLM and the recipient will meet or correspond weekly to discuss progress and track project outcomes, as well as discuss any intern issues or needs.
